Reflection is “the process of creating and clarifying the meanings of experiences in terms of self-relation to both self and world” (Boyd and Fales, 1983, p101). It is important to be able to reflect on experiences because the act of reflection helps an individual to understand what they did or did not do well and helps them to correct it for the future times. In this paper, I will be reflecting on the cycle of a group project which included the formation stage, conflicts stage, and the adjourning stage of the group assignment. Joining a new organization is daunting itself, and joining a new class and having to go straight into a group project is even more nerve racking. In order to be most effective, group projects need to have communication …show more content…
We all came with different cultural backgrounds and experiences (Gudykunst, 2012). We were not always in an agreement on each concept, for example we all did not have the same meaning for the concept of college. Additionally, the USA is a Low context country where things have to be said and expressed to understand communicational concepts. While in High context countries, such as Italy, they don’t rely on just verbal communication (Hall, 1989). According to Hall, the basic differences in the way that members of different cultures perceived reality are responsible for miscommunications of ideas and concepts. We also used written and verbal communication with in our meetings (Mehrabian,1971). I feel that we did more verbal communication than written and this goes along with the ratio of 55-38-7. We were organized but it was hard for us to portray our ideas because of the language barrier. Some of the group members would explain in Italian to each other than try to translate it to English. They used Italian in the group message once and I was very confused. I wish I asked what they were saying more than I actually did. There were a lot of times I stayed quiet because I did not know what was happening. On top of the language boundaries their accents were very strong when they spoke sometimes making it even more of a challenge to try to communicate ideas. In the future, I would be more direct about

The main challenge of this group situation is that there was a sudden rise of conflict among members at the beginning to mid phase of the project. This resulted the possible development of groupthink (Janis, 2008). As a leader in this situation, I would firstly feel lousy and disappointed in myself that I didn’t take note of group’s division and how the meeting could be more inclusive of everyone’s opinion (Chadha, 2016). However, at that point, I would also probably feel confused but yet curious as to why it was suddenly voiced out, hence thought that I should facilitate to explicit the thoughts and feelings of each member to better understand as well.…

Considering that there are several consequences that may interrupt a group’s climate, this week the group discovered how the variables of culture may influences group climates. Alana, Latasha, and Deborah agreed that culture diversity within a group environment may limit the communication between group participants. In the event of Alana participating in virtual group environments she discovered how individuals of different cultures presented different forms of communication. Although, physical contact was not presented, Alana, realized how a group participant’s communication by the means of writing could be challenging, fun, and or interesting. Meanwhile, Latasha expresses how an individual’s belief is associated with their development, and this affect how members in society or groups communicate, since individuals are familiar with doing “things” their way.…

Prior to starting my program in educational counseling, I strongly believed that I wanted to work in a four year setting. However, when I took ‘Group Counseling’ and met Dr. Mosqueda, she slowly convinced me to seek out the community colleges. As the class progressed, she mentioned the opportunity of doing hours at El Camino College, in particular the First Year Experience (FYE) program, so I decided to take the offer. This preface is important because it gives a glimpse into my constant eagerness to learn more about what exactly counselors do at the community college. Internship Site…

Having started the People and Organization module, in the first week of seminar, forming a group was necessary, as it was a discussion based activity, but unknowingly it helped me form my group for the Junction Hotel presentation. The aim behind this piece of writing is to reflect upon the process and the formation of my group. Reflection is ‘... a form of mental processing with a purpose and/or anticipated outcome that is applied to relatively complex or unstructured ideas for which there is not an obvious solution’. (Moon 1999 pg.23). Moon (1999) also states that we reflect for many reasons; important reasons being to critically review our behavior and that of others.…

On October 13, 2016, I attended the Team Communication Workshop Part II: Handling Difficult People and Situations, presented by Dr. Joanna Wolfe from the Global Communication Center. It was a workshop about how to handle working on a group project with people who might be difficult to work with and how to deal with uncomfortable situations in a professional manner. Dr. Wolfe noted in the beginning that based on the research that she and other GCC staff have conducted, women and minorities in general tend to face problems especially in scenarios where another group member dominates the other group members and the group project in general. The workshop was interactive, so we were presented with different scenarios that we may face in our careers and asked to rate the different kinds of reactions based on how effective we…

Throughout the year, as a class we have been given many different challenges in either the form of an essay, speech, or group presentation. The final assignment given to us was a group project presentation. From growing up in an age filled with technology, I have come to love projects that revolve around making some form of a PowerPoint presentation. This PowerPoint though, was both difficult and interesting for the reasons of being assigned group members not of my own choosing, learning to listen to others ideas which can help me to learn something new, and using former knowledge while working together to create a clean, in depth, and well prepared presentation. With working in groups of students whom I have known since I was young but…

Team building was also a strength our team implied. Our team never encountered any conflicts with each other while working on this project. When we were all assigned roles in the project everyone seemed pleased with what their responsibilities were. Everyone’s ideas were always heard and we were able to come up with a solution to a problem as a group. We seemed to get along very well, help each other out with any parts we had trouble with and get the job done by the expected date.…
