Reflection On The Ashford Writing Center

Decent Essays
I decided to choose the Ashford Writing Center because I want to improve my writing skills and learn how to be a better writer. The three topics I chose to discuss are personal writing which is under the types of college writing tab, proofreading which is under the writing tools tab, and fixing fragments which is under the grammar tab. I learned personal writing is subjective writing which means it is based on personal feelings or opinions not facts and statistics. I even learned personal writing is written in first person point of view which means you use the words I,me, and my. I learned proofreading is one of the final steps in the writing process. I even learned some of the strategies that work well when proofreading are take a break,

In completing the course English 112 at Robeson Community College, I have found myself with a new found understanding how to write various genres, and do them well. Newly, I have experienced the handling of opinion writing, research writing, and direct analyzation writing. These concepts greatly helped me achieve the knowledge of love in writing. This class had an overall positive affect on the individual I now am, and created a way in which I read an assignment, sit down, and promptly beginning work. In this class, aspects such as research, analyzation, and procrastination hit the closest to who I was before enrolling and completing this course.…

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

The writing expected from college courses is one that most are unfamiliar with. Although students learn basic English skills throughout grade school and up to high school, most of the advanced steps are forgotten by the time the student is to enter college. Paired with this, are the nontraditional students, who haven’t studied advanced academic language for long periods of time. Professors are expecting students of all kinds of study to have a high academic vocabulary and high writing skill. Often times a gap in remedial writing courses within the first semester or so.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

During the course of my many semesters left here at Alvin College I really want to focus on writing more, and advancing with each semester one at a time. I have a lot of minute things that I need to work out in my writing before I get to the level I eventually would like to be at when I graduate. I still would like to improve my punctuation, as well as, some other characteristics of my writing; however, I feel I have made incredible strides since the beginning of the year. My main goal with writing in college is to look back on freshman year and put side by side the papers to how I am writing senior year and to be able to see how far I have come, and how much I have developed as a writer. I want to leave Alvin College going into the world as a confident writer, one that has accomplished the goals on my to-do list.…

For my first semester of college, I took this class having previous experience in AP English courses. So I thought the class would be easy and I believed I wouldn’t learn anything new. After a couple classes however, I realized that I still had to improve my skills as a writer. Throughout the course of the semester, I was able to better understand the importance of peer edits, utilizing my resources, and writing elements which helped my growth as a student and a writer.…

Our class trip to the writing center was a nice get-away. For all of my classes this semester, I am either in the physical science building or the life science building. So, yes—I would consider our trip to Knobview-208 to be an exotic get-away from the windowless rooms of my science classrooms. Knobview is a really cool building because there is an extensive amount of students’ art work hanging all around the building for other students to admire. Knobview also has all of the theatres for plays and other productions which I am looking forward to attending.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

At the beginning of this English course, I was so nervous and scared that I would fail. I do not think I have ever been a good writer. It has always terrified me because I have difficulty putting my thoughts down on paper. This course has proven to be highly inspiring to me as well as frightening. It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…
