This mindset that I have has helped me a lot in my social relationships. In high school I was not in a certain group or clique. I was friends with every type of group there is in high school. Whether it be gays, jocks, loners, or even the jocks. I was so open to meeting new friends that I did not …show more content…
This made me think about the struggles that immigrants face when coming to America. We spoke about a few terms that can relate to the immigrants changing and adapting to the American culture.
These immigrants who come into America are known as ethnic minorities, which is described as indigenous peoples who have moved to urban areas. Many people move to different areas for financial reasons or even freedom reasons. These immigrants also experience assimilation. Which is when dominant groups are forced to compel a minority group to adopt the dominant culture. One of the main examples of this would-be language. One main example that has happened to me was when I was explaining how a guy at the basketball court I was playing basketball with told me I was good as basketball for a girl. This is an example of a micro aggression. It is defined as casual degradation of any marginalized group. A lot people use these aggressions not necessarily on purpose to hurt you but they just make assumptions based off societies standards or expectations. Another situation that has happened to me was that someone said you are pretty for a black girl. This is one that I hear all the time which is funny because I am barely of black descent. I also have had situation where someone asked me well what are you, this is asking me what exactly what race am I. Eventually, the term came to encompass the casual degradation of any socially marginalized group, such as the poor or the disabled. Not just targeting the African American race. A man named Derald Wing Sue describes micro aggressions as generally happening below the level of awareness of well-intentioned members of the dominant culture. According to Sue, micro aggressions are different from overt, deliberate acts of bigotry, such as the use of racist epithets, because the people perpetrating micro aggressions often intend no offense and are unaware they are causing harm. Most people have experienced this at least one time in their
