Personal Reflection Of My Microeconomics Class

Decent Essays
O2 This class ties in to my social relationships quite a bit. I am one of the most open minded people I believe, when I look at certain people I don’t consider myself to be one to judge off just anything. I know a lot of people who judge just based solely off looks such as color, tattoos, appearance in the way the other person may dress. I don’t believe that you can really judge someone based off what they look like or their religion or cultures.
This mindset that I have has helped me a lot in my social relationships. In high school I was not in a certain group or clique. I was friends with every type of group there is in high school. Whether it be gays, jocks, loners, or even the jocks. I was so open to meeting new friends that I did not

This made me think about the struggles that immigrants face when coming to America. We spoke about a few terms that can relate to the immigrants changing and adapting to the American culture.
These immigrants who come into America are known as ethnic minorities, which is described as indigenous peoples who have moved to urban areas. Many people move to different areas for financial reasons or even freedom reasons. These immigrants also experience assimilation. Which is when dominant groups are forced to compel a minority group to adopt the dominant culture. One of the main examples of this would-be language. Many people believe that you must know or be able to speak fluent English to live in this country. The people are forced to speak what most people in America speak. Another main example I can think of is When Muslim people are criticized for wearing their head scarves. This is not right as all, just because most people do not practice that religion and wear certain clothing does not mean that a person or group of people don’t have the right to wear and practice what they

One main example that has happened to me was when I was explaining how a guy at the basketball court I was playing basketball with told me I was good as basketball for a girl. This is an example of a micro aggression. It is defined as casual degradation of any marginalized group. A lot people use these aggressions not necessarily on purpose to hurt you but they just make assumptions based off societies standards or expectations. Another situation that has happened to me was that someone said you are pretty for a black girl. This is one that I hear all the time which is funny because I am barely of black descent. I also have had situation where someone asked me well what are you, this is asking me what exactly what race am I. Eventually, the term came to encompass the casual degradation of any socially marginalized group, such as the poor or the disabled. Not just targeting the African American race. A man named Derald Wing Sue describes micro aggressions as generally happening below the level of awareness of well-intentioned members of the dominant culture. According to Sue, micro aggressions are different from overt, deliberate acts of bigotry, such as the use of racist epithets, because the people perpetrating micro aggressions often intend no offense and are unaware they are causing harm. Most people have experienced this at least one time in their

The reading for this week correlated well to each other, in the sense that they all play a critical role in demonstrating how culture, perception, and generations have on our daily interactions. These articles demonstrate how language is interpreted differently and has an impact on an individual differently. In the book is it stated that “words, in addition to being symbolic, are also arbitrary. They derive their meaning from the people who use them”. A great example to this statement is the usage of the N word.…

She gives three causes, or explanations, on why immigrants are reluctant to assimilate, forgetting old traits and adopting new ones. 1) Explain why this is an example of internalized oppression. Use references from the course textbook and or PowerPoints to support your position. The man is clearly practicing internalized oppression against himself and his own people. To explain why, I would refer to this quote: “Experiencing oppression unfortunately is coupled with the internalization of that oppression. Some of us will learn strategies to avoid this internalization, but tragically most of us will take in some of the negative messages about ourselves and our groups and consequentially feel less than good about ourselves, others in our own groups or groups “like” ours.” (PowerPoint, week2, internalized oppression theory, slide 5)…

“Niggas see me rollin ' and they mood change---- Talkin ' filets with the truffle butter”(Nicki Minaj Truffle Butter). When you think about the word “nigga” and how it has been controversial since the early 1900s, not only are African Americans using the word “nigga,” it is getting said by within all of the different races. Even the rap artist are expressing the word “nigga”when they consecutively use it in every stanza in their rap or song. I can still remember my freshmen year when I was trying to get through a crowd of white people, and as I was trying to get through I got pushed to the side of the lockers and was called a “black monkey”. I was so shocked to be called that because it was the first time I ever experienced racial discrimination before in my life.…

It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…
