During the explanation of the activity and goals, I sat with my three and asked them what they thought a good friend was. I asked them what they liked about a friend and told them to write or draw what they came up with on a piece of chart paper. The clients gave good explanations and with these answers, I was better able to help them grasp what characteristics a good friend possessed. When we finished going around the table answering questions, the clients were then presented with what I called the “mystery box.” When I showed them what was inside, I told them that we would be building a structure where we could show friendship. However having not seen what was inside the box until that moment, I was admittedly unprepared. The box had various pieces of cardboard, smaller pieces of wooden beads and blocks, as well as other small items. After taking the items out of the box, I sat with them and helped them create a basis for their structure. Having decided on a camp ground, rather than a building, I gave the clients each an item that they were in charge of and because they were in charge of this item, I explained that they would have to share the objects between each other. While this portion of the program went smoothly and I could see the clients understanding the goals as time progressed, there would be a few things that I would change. Firstly, as I sat with the clients, I saw that they understood that a friend is a person who shares. Secondly, I saw they understood what good characteristics of a good friend are. I also asked everyone what they shared and why this could be a part of being a good friend. The one thing that I noticed that could be changed, should this program be implemented again, I would share anything that I noticed that they did not share that could help them better define a good characteristic of a friend.
