Reflection On Service Learning

For my service learning project, since I am a non-practicing religious person I chose to seek out an individual who is religious and discuss some of our similarities and differences. I chose this particular project because I often find myself confiding in one of my religious friends, about different aspects in my life and I feel that she provides me with appropriate advice often from a religious standpoint. In order to fulfill the requirements of this project, I invited my friend to lunch during this past week and explained to her my objective for this project, which by the way she fully understood and had no question about helping me. Kaye and I have become close friends over the past year and a half, we basically spend most of our day together …show more content…
The major difference between us, would be that Kaye attends church every Sunday and I unfortunately do not attend mass. Growing up Kaye didn’t have a choice to attend church on Sunday as it was required by her parents, as for me it was not necessary that I go. Another huge difference is that I had my first child at the young age of 15 out of wedlock and although Kaye does not have any children she did not live with her now husband until they married in October. Kaye is 27 years old and wasn’t even allowed to sleep over at her husband’s house before marrying him. He could sleep over at Kaye’s parents although he did have to sleep on the sofa, I think a relationship like theirs is very hard to come by these days. I think the main reason I confide in Kaye and trust her judgement is because no matter the kind of day we experience, whether it bad or good Kaye still seems to find the positive in every situation. I truly admire her for that. I on the other hand sometimes get frustrated with the little things in life. At those moments, I know I can fall back on Kaye and she will always find the words that make my day that much better. I believe that is the true meaning of our friendship.
I think this project fit into my classroom content in the way that this course is teaching me something new every single day, I learn something new about Kaye and the kind of friendship we have created. In completing this assignment, I take with

At age 11 she started work on a plantation to help earn money for her family, after her father’s sudden death. Working at such a young age prevented her from receiving an education. She feels ashamed for not being able to read or write, which kept her from building friendships because she did not want anyone to know of lack of education.…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. A true friendship is one in which both friends are willing to help each other when one is in trouble. A Chinese proverb says: Only when the year grows cold do we see the qualities of the pine and the cypress; only when the troubles come do we see true friendships. This proverb states exactly what I believe a true a friendship is; two people are only true friends when they help each other in times of trouble. However, there must be a balance between the seriousness of the trouble and the help that is provided. For example, the friendship between Damon and Pythias is tested because the level of seriousness in terms of trouble reaches the highest level.…
