Reflection On Service Learning Experience

April 16, 2016 is the date I started my service learning hours with Pricilla she was diagnose with autism after she was involved in a car accident at the age of only two week. Pricilla is now 23 and has one brother and two sisters, who are smaller than her. My service learning location was at Grauwyler Park, which is located in Dallas, Texas near the Dallas Love Field airport. I have many enjoyable experiences with Pricilla and her family. One memorable experience was interacting with Pricilla and her family we played small mini games like, soccer, tag, kickball, basketball, and many more games, which they loved. Also, Pricilla’s family treated me like one of their own. They are very nice people and till this date they still invite me over …show more content…
I could find away to get her involved; eventually she started to get involve. In addition, another negative experience I had with Pricilla was, there were some kids popping fireworks and Pricilla started freaking out. We didn’t know how to control her, until the loud noise stop. This is when I realize Pricilla is sensitive to loud noises. One thing I tried to change throughout my service learning experience was Pricilla’s teamwork when we played team games, because she didn’t like sharing the ball, nor the equipment. I tried to correct not only Pricilla’s technique in how to properly hit a soccer ball, but her entire family. I decided to make this changes because I thought it would be beneficial not only for Pricilla, but for the flow of the game. One example on how I would work with people with disabilities would be learning in advance what type of disability they have and special needs they might require. I would also have modifications ready for the types of activities I would have them due. In the future I would like to improve there way of living for example, teaching them physical activities, which will help to improve there health. The most challenging aspect of the learning experience for me was getting started, I didn’t really know how to start and how to make activities for Pricilla and her family that weren’t going to make them

As my second level 1 Fieldwork, I chose to volunteer for the Raleigh County Special Olympics Cheerleading team. There were four cheerleaders whose deficits ranged from Down syndrome, psychological, speech, low muscle tone, also across the autism spectrum. In which, Cheerleading enhances the following: attention span, comprehension, organization, sequencing, increased endurance, postural control, and increases social skills. Over a course of a month we gathered to participate in the learning of cheers and a competition dance. The support the athlete’s family had showed during practices and competition was influential to not only their child or family member but to me, as a volunteer and as an Occupational Therapy Assistant Student.…

This year my service learning included the Special Olympics and the PCC Health Fair. The Special Olympics was founded in the 1950’s by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. She noticed that young children with intellectual disabilities did not have a place to play. The mission is to work in the community to change the attitudes about people with intellectual disabilities and raising awareness. They provide a safe environment where children and adults with disabilities can focus on what they can do, not on what they can’t do.…

Last year, Chris volunteered with a company called Behavior Respite in Action, this experience showed him the challenges of working with teenagers with mild to severe autism. It was definitely not what he had expected, while some were cooperative and friendly, others were disengaged and difficult to work with. Working with this company showed him the challenges that many families face when they have a relative with psychological disabilities, but he was able to learn from them and assist the families through behavioral intervention that consisted mostly of behavior modification. Watching the slight progressions, even the small improvements, were always rewarding, whether it was aiding in reducing an undesirable behavior like not interacting…

When I was first introduced to the project I spoke to many of my friends about their own personal experiences with the sociology program and where they recommended to volunteer. After much consideration I decided that Equestrian Connection was the place I wanted to volunteer. I only called once and signed myself up for their volunteer brochure. They contacted me back Immediately and sent me specific training dates at which I could come to Equestrian Connection to get verified as a sidewalker. I hadn’t thought about signing up elsewhere because the overall aspect of their organization interested me so much.…

This past week on September 29th, I sat down in person to interview my host teacher; Mrs. B. Mrs. B is a special education teacher at New Haven Elementary School of Columbia Public Schools, and she has been teaching students with disabilities for 15 years. Throughout all 15 years of teaching, she has always been in a self-contained classroom, but as the years have gone on she has experienced students of all different functioning levels. Her first year of teaching was in Moberly, due to the fact that she was hired on as a basketball coach. After her first year there, she realized that the school was too small, so the rest of her fourteen years have been at the elementary school, New Haven. Mrs. B. was inspired to be a special educator while…

At the age of five, I quietly assembled the most complex puzzles my mother could find. Without taking a break, I would sit for hours, with my eyes glued to the thoughtfully crafted pieces that filled the living room floor. Lost in the world of the puzzle, I caringly placed each piece into its home. With every move of my hand, the scrambled image would gradually become clearer to my mother’s eye. As each small wooden piece found its way into the larger plan, there were moments where I would be so attentive to the puzzle that no words could break the trance.…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Three words that best describe my service-learning experience would be enlightening, appreciative, inspirational.…

After meeting Leslie Kuhn,I may have had a central purpose with my life. Well, not Leslie A. Kuhn of MSU herself, but whenever I describe Lilian, their characters seem quite parallel. Not only is she the most brilliant lady I have ever met,but she also exhibits a compassionate heart. Sadly, people never recognize Lilian as the beautiful individual she is or what she has to offer. While the society describe her as ''challenged'',I came to recognize her as unexpected role model.…
