Register to read the introduction… I enjoyed all of the articles in a way but the one I enjoyed the least was the one I found most beneficial. Shitty first drafts taught me that it is okay to write like an elementary school child because it helps to get all the thoughts out. There was no need to be embarrassed because it’s just a rough draft, why try to make it perfect?. Before I read this article I thought my rough drafts had to be perfect or close to it and that is the reason why I had such a hard time getting started on the essay or even writing an essay. The other three articles I didn’t find them beneficial in any way but interesting. A brush with reality I found out what toothpaste really consists of, why it’s so expensive, and why it is harmful to digest. A secret life on the McJob made me realize when working at a fast food restaurant the demeanor of the employee often resembles the manager. Don’t complain about the employee demeanor until you’ve met the manager. Snoopers at work was the most interesting but also made me feel violated. I never knew it was legal to violate someone’s privacy to see if they are shoplifting or track a persons every move. It makes me not want to go out in public or even seem trustworthy of working for a major company. Although only one of the articles pertained to the English class itself, the professor picked articles that would also be appealing to the students outside of …show more content…
Our class wrote a process, argumentative, compare/contrast and an evaluative essay. The first two essays our teacher gave us the option to work together. Rarely many teachers do this but she took into consideration how the students would feel about it. Doing so made the academic writing process a little easier. For the process essay my group and I wrote about the different types of interviews and the process of each one. By far this was my favorite topic to write not only because it was a group essay but because I learned something from writing the essay. I now know when and what to expect when I go to different interviews. The argumentative essay was the most difficult essay for me to write and reflected upon my grade. Instead of me arguing my point verbally to someone I had to write it down. I feel as if I would be able to better get my point across if I was arguing with the person. Following the argumentative essay was a compare contrast essay. Taking into consideration how much I want to be in the medical field I wrote on Anorexia and Bulimia. Last but now least, the current, evaluative essay; in this essay we are to evaluate a few things pertaining to the English 111 course such as the book, the essays and the instructor. Despite my hate for writing essays I liked that we didn’t write one type of essay but a variety to better prepare us for other English courses in the

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Between the world and me book is a great book felt with personal experiences and some trials in tribulations for African Americans such as myself had to face growing up in the inter city of Detroit. This book touched on personal issues that I believe every typical poor to middle class Blacks had to experience and was easily affected by these situations. Throughout this course, I have learned several things, from how to write a rhetorical analysis to how to properly cite a quote. Prior to entering English 121 I had no idea what a rhetorical analysis even was. Then after that, I did not know how to properly cite a quote in MLA 8 format. Including learning how to write, I learned about different sides of very controversial subjects from sexual and gender identity though, the biggest problem I saw was the rate that our U.S. military service men commit suicide at. Finally, I learned how to properly format an essay for an example, this is the introduction paragraph and the following paragraphs will be body paragraphs!…

I decided to repurpose my essay from the first unit. After looking back through my essays, the cultural analysis essay was my weakest and the one I struggled with most. It also happened to be our first major essay. Instead of going the conservative route and choosing my best essay to repurpose, I wanted to repurpose the cultural analysis essay for a few reasons. First, I thought it would be most convenient for the multi-modal aspect of this assignment because my original essay involved pictures that I analyzed.…

I leaped into my college career by smoothly transitioning from high school to college with the Bridge Program. During this program, the IUPUI staff gave brief introductions and lessons on what was generally expected in college. The English portion of this program reassured me that my AP English classes that I took in high school had prepared me well enough for college writing. However, I was still a little unsure exactly how much writing was expected due to the fluctuation in course experience due to professor variance. However, after attending the first couple of classes I was once again reassured that I was prepared for this basic English class.…

An exercise in class allowed me to understand my own reasoning for helping others as well as what may be my own selfish reasons for seeking this profession. For example, at one point in the exercise, I broke ground into my own self-assessment and found insight that I was partially seeking the profession for money and for my savior complex. I felt that this observation of myself showed that I was overall, functioning normally with both healthy and minimal unhealthy motivations. Another concern that came across my mind is when I have a…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
