Self-Reflection After Teaching
Self-evaluation is a powerful tool that will help you become a better teacher. Reflecting on and evaluating your teaching after a lesson is over will give you insights that will make your future lessons stronger. This evaluation is focused on you as the teacher and decision-maker rather than the student.

1. Did your lesson plan goals connect with your student’s assessment data? How?

Before this lesson, I did not have much assessment data, therefore, I needed to finish collecting the assessment data. I had completed my running records and CRI, but I had not done any of the other OS tasks, the PAST, or the WTW spelling assessment. This lesson allowed me to finish gathering assessment data to use during future

What instructional decisions did you make during the lesson that paid off in terms of student learning?

Since I was gathering more assessment data today and playing catch-up, I decided to start with the easier OS tasks and move to the harder ones. We had time left after we finished the OS tasks, so I ended with the PAST and WTW which was a good decision because she really enjoyed the “games” during the PAST and was able to finish strong.

Presentation: Was your student engaged? Were you clear in your directions and explanations? How was the pacing of your lesson?

Shenandoah seemed engaged during the lesson for the most part. After about the third OS assessment, she was getting a little antsy, and by the last OS task, I could tell she wanted to be done (she even asked, “when are we going to be done with the tests”); I had the assessments in the order I wanted to do them, so once she finished one, I gave her the next one with little wait time in between which helped her stay engaged and on task. My instructions were clear; ninety-nine percent of my instructions came straight from the assessment instructions. The pacing of my lesson was quick; I expected to only be able to get through the OS tasks because of how much time it took her to get through the CRI and running records, but she got more done that expected, so we were able to get the “other” section half done as

On the day of Shelby and I’s presentation I was excited to share our fun and interactive math activity with my classmates. We incorporated a lot of SIOP strategies that were explicitly shown in our slides throughout the whole presentation. It was extremely helpful to receive feedback from our peers about other ideas, strengths and weaknesses in our lesson plan. Some of my classmates told me that we should ask questions that extend their thinking so I included this during the lesson and this was really helpful advice.…

“It is essential that teachers closely monitor the performance of all students, especially the progress of those who appear to be struggling with grade-appropriate academic task. In this way, the teacher can implement alternative instructional strategies early and with an eye to meeting specific students’ needs (Overton, T. (2016), p.115). This assessment plan for John will focus on the developmental needs he is currently lacking. The assessment goals I have established for John were created and agreed upon after numerous meetings between John, John’s parents, and myself. Also, I apply the six rights (patient, drug, dosage, route, frequency, day), and three checks every time I am going to administer a medication. When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

On October 27th I taught my lesson about special education and focused on learning disabilities. My lesson consisted first of a warm-up where students wrote on a piece of paper what they know about what a learning disability is and what types of learning disabilities. Then I proceeded with my lesson and taught the students what learning disabilities are, problems that students who have a learning disabilities may have, and types of learning disabilities. Third, I proceeded with my activity, which was unscrambling sentences. Next, I showed the students a video to sum up the lesson.…

The grow your skills and to gain a better understanding of yourself as a teacher, reflection is essential. Reflection allows teachers, to look back at lessons, weeks, terms or even years and view what went right and what went wrong thus allowing teachers to start to think critically about what is best for them moving forward. Reflection is crucial to the success of a student teacher, as without it they will struggle to grow, recognise their mistakes and adjust their methods in the future. When reflecting on my own placement and in particular on the above lesson, I have learnt a lot about myself and what I need to do to become a quality teacher.…

I think the Bafa Bafa activity was a great experience for me in that it helped me to think more abstractly on culture. I learned that each culture is different and has their own set of norms. For instance, the alpha culture was more loving and approachable while the beta culture felt more uncomfortable with all the “touching”. I think this is a good experience for us educators in that it helps us visually see some differences amongst each person. I also learned that language can have a significant effect on each person.…
