I of course, choose something in the fashion category, I was so nervous to do it because I had never sewn anything before, and I was going to have to make something from plain material, a pattern, and the directions to the pattern. Luckily, my teacher is an experienced sewer and taught me how to do the basics, all I can say when learning to sew, be patient, be steady, and the seam ripper is your new best friend. The first time I used the sewing machine I was beyond nervous, I was so afraid of breaking something on it, and just not being able to get the hang of sewing at all. But after trying it out a few times on some scrap material, it was actually easier than I had anticipated, until it came to sewing on the top of my dress’s side panel. It is easy to sew straight, but when you have to sew on a curve, that is not so easy your first time, that’s when that seam ripper was my best friend. I probably had to rip out those curves two or three times, because I did not like the way the curves looked, I’m a little bit of a perfectionist, especially with small details like that because I knew if the way it looked caught my eye when I looked at it, knew the judges would see it too. Sewing those curves were so frustrating that at one point I almost gave up on them, but eventually I got the hang of it, slowly but surely. The first dress I completed wasn’t perfect, there were errors, and things that were not done a hundred percent right, but I got the chance to go to the state completion after being an automatic qualifier at the local district completion because there were so few of us competing in that category. After redoing my dress twice to correct things that needed to be fixed before going to the state competition, the dress was a hundred times better than the first one I
