Reflection on Reconstruction

Reconstruction was a period in time where the whole country was forced to rebuild from the Civil War. During reconstruction, the United States’ laws were rewritten, our government was basically built back up from the bottom, and there were questions about whether or not African Americans deserved voting rights. Lincoln originally proposed the idea to have voting rights for all freed blacks. Although many agreed with Lincoln, he was assassinated just 6 days after Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. The task of rebuilding then fell into Andrew Johnson’s hands. From there, Johnson vetoed one of the most important laws ever, the Civil Rights Act.
