Collaboration with Mentor
The month of March was met with a multitude of reasons for meeting. The first significant reason for meeting was discussion on a school violence incident that took place at Enid High School and Emerson Middle School. On a Thursday night, Enid Police Department was made aware of a social media threat against the school. The threat was reported to be a potential shooting threat against two area schools. As with what is normal with social media, the actual scenario was twisted and falsified. The true incident was two separate localized events from students. My time during March could be broken down into to sections. The first being political upkeeping from a local, and state level. The other being a potpourri of random tasks. I had the opportunity to stay informed of local and state issues regarding education. From a local stand point, I attended Enid Public Schools Board Meeting. This meeting was based upon the potential upcoming state wide walk out. Many other educators were present during the meeting. Discussion was had ratifying a letter to the legislator encouraging them to find a solution for funding issues. From there, multiple domains of a walkout were discussed. For instance, the high school still plans on administering the ACT on April 3rd even if a walk out takes place. I was fortunate enough to attend Salina Public Schools Board meeting. This experience was unique. The meeting was extremely well attended. For it being spring break, there were still 50 community members present. Their discussion was center about letting activities still take place. The town seems to be divided into two sides. Either all activities happen, or none happen. As an educational leader, I must know when it is my role to step into and out of the political light. I cannot use my position to push for changes from politicians. While I can promote my political views as an individual, I cannot use my title or position to lobby. It is not my responsibility to change the opinions of my staff or the public.
