Prokopis March Practicum Reflection
Collaboration with Mentor
The month of March was met with a multitude of reasons for meeting. The first significant reason for meeting was discussion on a school violence incident that took place at Enid High School and Emerson Middle School. On a Thursday night, Enid Police Department was made aware of a social media threat against the school. The threat was reported to be a potential shooting threat against two area schools. As with what is normal with social media, the actual scenario was twisted and falsified. The true incident was two separate localized events from students. Students made offhand comments about hurting other students. One scenario was even a class lead discussion in a class about school

My time during March could be broken down into to sections. The first being political upkeeping from a local, and state level. The other being a potpourri of random tasks. I had the opportunity to stay informed of local and state issues regarding education. From a local stand point, I attended Enid Public Schools Board Meeting. This meeting was based upon the potential upcoming state wide walk out. Many other educators were present during the meeting. Discussion was had ratifying a letter to the legislator encouraging them to find a solution for funding issues. From there, multiple domains of a walkout were discussed. For instance, the high school still plans on administering the ACT on April 3rd even if a walk out takes place. I was fortunate enough to attend Salina Public Schools Board meeting. This experience was unique. The meeting was extremely well attended. For it being spring break, there were still 50 community members present. Their discussion was center about letting activities still take place. The town seems to be divided into two sides. Either all activities happen, or none happen. As an educational leader, I must know when it is my role to step into and out of the political light. I cannot use my position to push for changes from politicians. While I can promote my political views as an individual, I cannot use my title or position to lobby. It is not my responsibility to change the opinions of my staff or the public. It is the educational leader’s responsibility to inform stakeholders of proper information and allow them to decide on their

The leadership role in which I have had the greatest positive influence in has been as the Fine Arts Commissioner in ASB. As the Fine Arts Commissioner, it is my responsibility to showcase the performing arts in any way I possibly can, and while I have successfully done that, I’ve also successfully created a new rally that now occurs every year. Even though last year was my first year on ASB, I still made an impact on my school by taking charge of said new rally. My ASB director wanted to try having an on-campus winter dance before winter break and we figured the best way to promote the new dance would be through a rally. In addition, my ASB director didn’t want to have cheer and dance perform in this rally, for they perform in every other…

As co-president of Queers and Allies (abbreviated Q + A), I have come across several disputes that have involved more than one teacher and an administrator. It came to the administration’s attention that one of the club members had expressed anger about how the presidents had chosen to present the club at fall fair. Despite the fact that the majority of the students at my school are liberal, the parents tend to be a more conservative crowd. My co-president and I took it upon ourselves to initiate the resolution and emailed our sponsor, the Dean of Students, and the teacher who had explained the student’s worries.…

With budget cuts to education and financial aid being decreased across the board with tuition costs being increased at the same time, less people can afford to pursue higher learning and sometimes can’t afford Pre-K to High School for their children. Teachers also suffer from this as their jobs become just that, jobs. Often times they are laid off by districts in order to cope with the sudden loss of funds which affects their families as well as their students. Lesser known in this battle are school bus drivers who also fall under the umbrella as education; they too, are laid off when budgets are cut and suffer from decreased pay from an already low paying job. The legislature tends to wait until there is a course case to focus on school funding and possible changes in how school funding operates because they’d rather it be a “silent” problem until people start to notice and have a public outcry about it.…

The objective of my classmates’ social boycott for the past three months is me. Even though I hold no position of power, or any sort of outstanding feature, other than wearing a hijab, I greet each school day with a smile to their hardened side glances. I suppose that after finding out that one of my friends had the answer key to a Latin final exam, one that had the entire junior year class anxious and jumpy, rebuking her for offering it to me and for even having possession of it in the first place, and then advising her to get rid of it, must have made me a target to her darts of suspicion on who told the administration about the cheated Latin final exam incident. The night before this debacle of the year, most of my Latin class members and…
