Practicum/ 4th Block
Practicum is a journey that I am content with being a part of. My practicum experience not only helped me gain a tremendous amount of knowledge in my career field, but it was also just an enjoyable experience. This section of the senior mastery process lasted for 6 weeks and a total of 75 hours. I chose to do my placement at Access Medical Center located at 6450 Maple street in Dearborn. When I left Junior workshop I had no idea where I could do my practicum at; my options didn’t come about until I met with a family friend. This friend, Steve Smith, seemed to have all the connections in the right places. Mr. Steve was able set up my internship with Nurse Practitioner Leigha Ford at Access. I had never met her, just talked or texted on the phone. My expectations really weren’t clear but I just had a feeling that I would love the center. When I arrived the second day it was just as busy but I was buzzed right in through the door, no more waiting in the lobby. Even though that first week was pretty busy the building was peaceful and there were little to none disturbances. I met Ms. Leigha and I even went with her to go see patients that first days. I loved the hands-on experience and not just sitting down hearing about what goes on, but we did that as well. When N.P. The best part about being with Leigha was actually witnessing the other end of the patient-doctor relationship. Even shadowing her and seeing patients improve from their last visit, or having to tell a patient that they were just diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease. It gave me a full view for the life of doctors and highly trained …show more content…
During my time in the class we used career cruising which gave me some direction for what career I wanted to choose. After the questions that asked different things about me, my results stated that I liked to help people and the occupations such as a doctor, teacher, or community leader would be sufficient for my characteristics. One of the careers I was already exploring happened to be a doctor or medical advisor, so after and during the course of the class I began to research jobs in this field. I knew that I loved kids and I was a good fit to become a doctor, and that is how a pediatrician came to mind. I did even more research on the job and I fell in love with it because I realized that I wouldn’t mind doing the various tasks of a pediatrician for the rest of my life. Starting Junior workshop I wanted to be a cardiologists, in the beginning of twelfth grade I decided on a pediatrician; being with Ms. Leigha I have decided I want to be a highly trained pediatric nurse. I changed my mind seeing that a N.P. is more involved with the patients, and also has more flexible hours. Without the practicum experience I would have never been able to realize these aspects and consequently make the decision. I knew what my research question would consist of my first week and a half at the medical center. Before entering I never paid attention to the fact that the “A” in Access
