University of Maryland College What My Chief Said That Made Me Reflect On My Powerlifting Career There’s a moment in every person’s life that you can contribute your success to whether positive or negative. I experienced a turning point in my life while I was a young sailor in the United States Navy. As an Armed Forces member you are expected to hold yourself to the highest fitness standards. After my chief walked away I wondered why he wasn’t as motivated. Why was he in the gym if he didn’t want to improve himself? People come to the gym to push themselves and be better than they were yesterday. That’s why I love putting all that weight on my back. Why was he there if he didn’t want to improve himself? To me there was nothing better than setting a goal or number you wanted to lift and crushing it, and then do it again. Nothing gets me fired up knowing I have a big squat day coming up or even a bench day. My whole day would be structured around my lifting. Sometimes why wife asks me if I ever get bored considering I’ve been doing this for 8 years. I always tell her its my passion and my motivation grows by the day. My mentor Dave Tate said “Passion trumps everything.” He could not have said it better. I do not doubt my chief has his own passions that he is motivated about but I don’t understand why he was questioning mine. To me I found it odd for him to come out of his way just to say something. The problems of the world is just like the weight on the bar. Although problems might be weighing you down you have nothing to do but rise through it. Its almost like a life lesson every time I lift. There’s not a day that goes by when I lace up my Chuck Taylors and throw on my ear buds that I don’t think about all the reasons I lift. Some cross my mind before others, but my daughter Harmen is always first. I truly hope that one day my daughter can be inspired by me whether its my work ethic or my commitment to be better no matter what people say.
