Reflection On Power And Power

For my community work I chose to partner with the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). Before I started interring at the DCA I had never heard of the DCA, or had any idea what they did. At first I was embarrassed, and I felt an ignorant that I didn’t know about this department that plays such an important part in our local government. The department helps the people of New York City in so many ways. It helps consumers with complains about business, no matter how big or small those business are. However, it also helps keep business informed and provides individuals with the information they need to know. The DCA holds seminars that the public can attend, and at these events inform both consumers and business of their rights.

A big part of my project was to influence people to act, become more confident and to be able to stand up for themselves. My idea of introducing everyone to the DCA and encouraging him or her to contact the DCA if they ever need anything was influenced, by reading Power and Empowerment. While reading Power and Empowerment I was introduced to different kinds of power. In my project I chose to focus on Power To and Power Within. Power is the ability to shape your own life, so in my project I introduced the idea of starting a business and being able to ask for help from other organizations, to not feel alone. The power within leads to the part of the project when I encourage everyone to file complaints against businesses and corporations if they are breaking their contract. This part leads back to people feeling ashamed and blamed for their problems. “Power within has to do with a person’s self-worth” (45).
