My Personal Growth

Progress and Conclusion on my Personal Growth The four diversity related topics I’ll be focusing on are: oppression & power, ethnic identity development, ableism and ageism. With the topic of oppression and power, as well as some the exercises we did, sort of made me realized how rough my bringing up and how easy some of the white students had it, regardless of their situation. It also made apparent who had more privilege than others and who was a bit more wary of the power they held with their racial identity. However, those people aren’t me and I would never put myself in their shoes. Growing up as a low-income minority may have been difficult, but it made me humble and benevolent towards my friends and family. Along the lines of marginalization, …show more content…
I’d like to think of myself as a pretty inclusive person, but I am not perfect by any means, so it’s good that I’m still learning. I’ve made friends with a first year student who is a wheelchair user and I also try to assist her in anyway I can. Even if it’s the little things, like helping her get a fruit cup, or yelling at my friends to get out of the way because she’s trying to exit the room. I’m also informing my friends to use less ableist language in order to make them more inclusive to any people they may meet in the future who have disabilities. Our campus is accessible, but there is always more we can do for our students with disabilities. Fixed sidewalks for those who are wheelchair users, differently more crosswalks and pedestrian lights that announce when to pass safely for those who are blind, and even more awareness that the student wellness center has therapy and group sessions for those who are dealing with mental …show more content…
I just thought that old folks always had been authoritative figures, but that’s tied more towards my specific culture. I was unaware that there were stereotypes for the elder population of our country. The grandmotherly and elderly statesmen are kind of double-edged swords in terms of how people see their elders, but also how the elders feel about being treated this way. My elders are still functioning but they aren’t in their eighties and nineties. I’ve also noticed in the past couple of years that a lot of elderly abuse stories have been appearing in the news and social media. Which although it’s a horrible situation and experience I presume, I’m glad that there is now an awareness for those who choose to put their older family members in the nursing home. On the opposing spectrum of age, there are plenty of middle-aged adults who accuse younger folks of not being “responsible enough” or “being too young to know what that is” It’s extremely rude and hurtful to invalidate someone’s experiences and knowledge simply because of their age. There’s also the part of culture working against older folks and younger teens/adults. The younger the population is, the more likely they will begin to see the older population as burdens and in a more negative way. We have to work on unlearning societal negatives and move forward with a more positive outlook on both

In today’s society, racism, prejudice, and stereotyping is often frowned upon and seen as politically incorrect. This wasn’t always the case, because just four decades ago, racism, prejudice and stereotyping was seen as a social norm. However, thanks to great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Andrew Goodman and many others, we as people are allowed to live in a more diverse and welcoming environment that gives equal rights and respect to everyone no matter race, size, or country of origin. Although it is important to recognize the progress we have made throughout the years, it is also crucial that students are aware and understand the numerous obstacles that people of color had to go through, to further appreciate…

    1. After reading the text and looking over the lecture I was not surprised to learn about how race and life worked together in conjunction with inequality. I would not consider myself a minority or someone who has faced racial inequality. I grew up in primarily sheltered neighborhood and was not aware really of what went on around me. However, as I aged I grew to see how even things simple things like school or TV fostered racial thoughts.…

As a society, it is our duty to protect and care for those that cannot do so for themselves. We owe it to the older generation to protect them when they are at their weakest. So why do we see year after year a rise in incidents of senior abuse? Doesn’t this show that we as a society have failed at protecting them? The writers of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette acknowledge there is something “very wrong with a society that allows the weakest and most vulnerable members of its society to be preyed upon” (“Nursing Home Horrors: Abuse of the Vulnerable is Sickening,” 2017, para. 1).…

Also, numerous studies provide evidence that older adults’ needs are changing. Grant (2001) postulated that older adults are now keenly aware of ‘the benefits of maintaining a physically active lifestyle and how such behavior can contribute to quality of life and the feel better phenomenon” (p. 778). Thus, stereotypes of older adults of the past are now viewed as irrelevant as shown by older adults that live “longer lifespans, delayed retirement, and economic realities” (North, 2015, p. 994) that are in contrast to the realities of…

Late Adulthood and Death Paper Having awesome desires makes it conceivable to anticipate the life course , all the more motivation to address its difficulties and perceive its glad amazements. Maturing hasn 't been seen as a basic trip for quite a while. Ageism is the one partiality we as a whole face, in spite of the fact that we can avert it if just we figure out how to expect it (MIT Press , 2002). Disposition has any kind of effect, yet a man might not have inspected contemplations and emotions around a standout amongst the most principal parts of your life which is maturing. It is senseless to deny we change as we become more seasoned; for the majority of us, this implies we turn out to be a greater amount of ourselves, less hesitant…

Aging portrayed in the mass media has not been an enjoyable or positive experience. The elderly typically suffer from negative stereotyping more than any other gender group. The media portrays increasing age with decreasing value as a human. Physical ability, personality, health, sociability, and work capability are all negative stereotypes that are associated with the elderly. Elderly today are not generally appreciated as wise and experienced, rather than useless and senile.…

“There are approximately 150 academic and administrative buildings on campus(Grant)… only about nineteen buildings comply fully with the Americans with Disabilities(ADA)” (Deshpande 296). In Manasi Deshpande’s essay, A Call to Improve Campus Accessibility, argues for more college campuses to accommodate for students with disabilities. She starts off her essay with a wheelchair-bound college student at University of Texas at Austin, Wes Holloway, and his struggle with campus accessibility. Throughout her essay, Deshpande explains the benefits for people and the university, once they meet the campus requirements for disabled people.…

The new friendships I had made taught me how to make friends within diverse groups, something I had never fathomed would happen. New cultural aspects became introduced to me in the small, impoverished neighbourhood as I learned more about Hispanic, African American, and other new culture’s I had not encountered or avidly interacted with before. This interaction with a new population showed me how similar most people are in spite of cultural and physical attributes. An awareness of the world around me formed and I learned I had not realized how much privilege I acquired it while living in the suburbs of Holly Springs and the fortune bestowed upon me to have been born into a white, suburban, Christian family.…

This section required that schools make accommodations and open their programs to people with disabilities. These accommodations can range from ensuring school buildings are wheelchair accessible to providing resources that provide people with disabilities with assistance. I can see the change first hand at my own university. Ensuring that the new buildings on campus are wheelchair accessible appears to be on the mind of the university. Another example I have experienced at the University of Illinois where the school ensures students with disabilities have the proper accomendations is providing translator to sit in on lectures for deaf students.…

Upon interaction with someone with disabilities I already have this preconceived notion of how I expect them to be like because of the limited information based on what I have seen on the TV. This causes me to have an inadvertent bias towards disabled people because I have been brainwashed by the media’s depiction of the disabled. For instance I once met a disabled girl at my summer camp, and I was instantaneously at a loss of words on what to say to her. My constant feelings of sympathy towards the disabled are caused, because I feel like a disability is something that is a hindrance to one’s daily life. In this case I am viewing people with disabilities as abnormal because I would not have had any problem communicating with her if she did not have a disability.…

In the American society, there are many myths about aging. Novak stated, “Some years ago, Robert Butler coined the term ageism to describe these negative attitudes toward aging (3).” These negative attitudes toward aging come from common sources such as, the media, magazines, advertisements, literature, and popular culture (23). One example of this is the television show, The Simpsons. The show depicts Grandpa Simpson as ignorant, forgetful, and timid.…

The media often paints a negative picture of what old age really looks like. These false depictions allow in turn negative stereotypes to be formed against the elderly. When watching television, whether a sitcom, movie, or even a commercial you will likely find the elderly are portrayed as; immobile, not interested in sex or lacking a sex drive, as care takers of grandchildren, has having poor eyesight, hearing loss, obnoxious and outspoken, unable to care for themselves, a…

In the academic institutions of today’s society, educating young minds on issues surrounding equity and diversity not only within education systems but also within the society we as individuals relate to, appears to be an increasing desire among educators and parents. This desire arises from the growing concern that issues involving equity and diversity must be implemented into course curriculum to alleviate concerns that young generations are not given opportunities to learn how to properly approach controversies and obstacles with these topics in their society. By incorporating materials and concepts of equity and diversity into all classrooms, including collegiate level classes, I believe that individuals will develop an improved understanding…
