Reflection On Penn State Board Of Trustees Scandal

Decent Essays
I would be hesitant to take the job, first of all, this scandal lasted for 15 years. Furthermore, the damage had been done. As a crisis management consultant, I would act as a leader and develop a crisis communication plan. Would get familiar with all my resources, and make sure the board of trustees is familiar as well. We would issue a public apology to the victims first, and then extend the apology to everyone else. I would address the board of trustees to let them know this incident went on for far too long, for them to be blinded. It appeared that the board put all its trust in the president of the school that would not happen again they need to be alert and aware of what’s going on around them. With recruiting season coming to a close, the NCAA has contacted me, the Athletic Director at the University of Kentucky, to inform me that they have evidence that Men’s Basketball coach, John Calipari, has violated several NCAA recruiting rules during the off-season of 2016. Upon committing to the University of North Carolina, the player took advantage of the NCAA self-disclosure rules, and reported that he was improperly recruited by Coach Calipari. As the athletic director, I have decided to utilize the “SLEEPE” Principle in order to review the situation to ensure the best decision is made in regards to the University of Kentucky. According to Title IX, the university is only required to take action if the incident is reported on campus. This portion of the case relates best to the deontological theory simply because the university focused on their duties, even though it was obviously not in the best interest of the victim for them to do so. With this being said, it is possible that the actions of the university could be found ethical by the deontological theory. However, under the provisions of the deontological theory, the coaches and school officials involved should have felt an intrinsic obligation to meet the needs of the victim after the incident occurred. Instead, the university failed to do as much as return a phone call to the victim’s family.…

To further this argument, the website for The Hunting Ground stated, “The filmmakers reached out to the presidents of every college and university mentioned in the film. Two university presidents were interviewed for the film, and thirty-five college or university presidents declined to speak or did not respond” (2015). I understand, not all the presidents from these institutions not wanting to get involved, but with all the egregious accusations surround these universities, how could no more than two presidents want to speak out. I firmly believe that attitudes reflect leadership and if the president doesn’t want to take a stance or speak out against these crimes, the reflection will be that the victims will remain quiet. The lack of vocal presence in regards to these presidents sets an awful precedent for how future issues will be…

From 1998 to 2011, assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky molested young boys on Penn State campus (Ferrell et al., 2015). It was later revealed that school officials and football coaches did very little to report and investigate early allegations that could have prevented several molestations. Cohen and DeBenedet (2012) contend that the reason university officials failed to report the sexual assaults was due to a phenomenon known as Groupthink, “whereby sound decision making is impaired by the bigger concern of group unity and preservation” (para. 2). To this end, school officials feared damaging the reputation of the university and football program more than seeking justice for the victims. The leadership contributed to the ethical violations at Penn State by neglecting their ethical responsibilities and not properly pursing the sexual assault allegations.…
