Reflection On Octavia's Brood

For this IPC #2

This is my reflections on the second IPC for the UACT program. For this reading the text "Revolution Shuffle" by Boa Phil in the book Octavia's Brood. I choose this book for it's collection of short stories with characters that reflect my student population at Excel Public Charter School. I selected Revolution Shuffle because of the outcome of the recent elections a lot of my students had fears based on what may or may not happen with the new administration. This text was also selected because of the characters and story used to communicate the author's vision. Boa Phi main characters are Vietnamese with the main protagonist be strong female character. These criteria makes the story especially appealing since it is something

In this class I have 28 learners with 7 SPED, 4 with behavioral IEPs, and one with one on one. In this mix one student Kieran. had multiple insights (8:08) which only proved his intelligence and insights are there if he and the others are given a chance. Also, during this reading the recording was limited to a partial classroom look since one camera was down for maintenance.
During the reading it was difficult to get the class into a complete listening mode, however this was more due to their excitement than behavior. As you can see in multiple time, learners where eager to offer their ideas to the discussion. The first insight was just :055 into the recording, with the discussion of figurative language used by the author. I think exchange shows the lack of figurative language that the learners have been exposed to. However, after a brief discussion the learners were able to have an ah ha moment and see the picture the authors was painting for them.

Think about a specific moment from the text based discussion, you have continue to think about form the lesson. Cite the specific moment in the video clip. Why is this moment memorable? What did you do that felt particular successful or challenging?
The I have two moments I think about. The first is at 8:08 when Kieran, discusses with the class his idea of the story so far. Kieran is a highly intelligent white learner who is has a history of behavioral issues in the school. His issues arise from not being challenge, and in this exchange, his intellect is on full display. He showed a great comprehension and academic courage to bring the main points of the story to the rest of the class. The second point is 20:42 when we as a class discuss the history of internment camps in the United States. This was one of those unexpected moments when new knowledge is brought into the classroom. The growth my learners showed in that moments will have ripple throughout the year and I am so glad it came with the class I thought needed the most help.

What changes would you, is you had the opportunity to teach this lesson again?

    1. Mrs. Carroll decided that day to begin ISTEP preparation with the students, using an audio book on the computer and a booklet for the students to study. The text that all the students listened to was Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling, a short classic story that I thought was excellent for seventh graders to easily follow along and prepare them for ISTEP. I was sitting next to another student who has an IEP…

The final book in Butler’s Lilith’s Brood series is Imago, a word which initially brought to my mind imago dei. However, a more interesting connection might be in the biological definition of “imago”. In this framework, “imago” refers to “an insect in its final, adult, sexually mature, and typically winged state” ; the imago stage is the final one before metamorphosis is complete. I wonder if Butler had this idea in mind when naming the last book in her trilogy; she certainly engages many scientific and biological ideas throughout (her ecology, her use of cancer, etc.). Imago is the conclusion to the trilogy; it is the last glimpse readers have into what the future of humanity will be.…

Metacognition Metacognition is a view of learning that many refer to as “thinking about thinking” when in reality it has a much deeper meaning than this simple summary. Metacognition is a process where an individual becomes aware of what they are learning and continually review their progress towards a goal (Livingston, Jennifer A. 1997). An example of this would be, if someone was doing advanced university math [Math 1000] and they are faced with a multiple page question the average student would follow steps they feel appropriate throughout the question whereas the professor would more than likely check their strategy throughout to avoid running into an incorrect solution. Part of metacognition is the ability to monitor if the steps being taken to reach a learning goal are correct or areas of which different strategies will need to be used.…

As the teaching session progressed, the students remained focused and paid attention to the topics on the PowerPoint and the extra explanations I was saying. They continued to actively participate by answering various questions and completing their notes with the missing key words. The general delivery of the teaching went well as shown by an average SET score of 4.2 for question 1 (Table 1). I spoke in a clear and concise manor which enabled the students to understand my descriptions and explanations of concepts clearly, and allowed them to have enough time to make any extra notes they wanted to write. Many students said that it was a “clear presentation and was easy to understand.”…

My observation—Seeing as though this lesson was part of a unit plan, the students were not given too much background information. The teacher informed the class that they would be reading a specific scene, and then watching the video clip of the scene in order to compare the two forms of media. The students were aware of what they were about to do, so the teacher probably did not feel it was necessary to outline the daily activities or supply them with background information. There was no assessment during this opener. Effective teachers should constantly be assessing their students in order to gauge what they remember, or already know.…
