Non Conformity Research Paper

Walking through a mall you notice that people are on their phones or another form of electronic; on them while alone, on them with friends, and even on them with their family. People in society have fallen into conformity, a conformity that supports social media over face to face contact with others. Undergoing a unit about nonconformity it was discussed that nonconformity is a tough thing to do. It can have great rewards but also some consequences. During an unplugging project, I got to experience what it was like to be a nonconformist in this day and age when it came to technology and our dependence to it, how hard it can be to break away from the social norm. I learned nonconformity is difficult when people and society work against you. Nonconformity is also risky because you could have friends and sometimes family turn against you because they have different beliefs. Despite all of that, it can be rewarding to not conform because it helps you be able to find a sense of self, individuality, and control.

While at the mall I noticed that many people were on their devices, even with friends. Some were texting others, and some were listening to something while the friend they were with was talking to them. The Adults at the mall seemed to use their phones the least when compared to the teenagers, however, I still saw quite a few parents on their phones while their kids were off goofing around with no real supervision. One thing that surprised me during the entire observation was that the mall had set up charging stations throughout the mall; every thirty feet was another charging station for someone to use either for phone or other social media
