Reflection On Night By Elie Wiesel

Speaking about this, I have very mixed emotions about our book, Night. It made me experience both heartbroken and radiant moments throughout the reading. My essential question all over was : How can the Nazis commit such an act on the a race of humans? The whole Holocaust era is a crime against humanity in many people’s eyes including mine. Multiple themes were shown in the book that can relate to people’s lives and in today’s society. Examples of those themes would be the closeness of family and silence.
Family is the most valuable thing in life. Without the people closest to you, everything will feel as though the world is coming to an end. This was not Elie’s case. He was in a way relieved that his father was gone, yet he was slightly broken and felt guilty for expressing his father’s death in such a way. I feel that if he were to be in different circumstances , misery would overcome him, just like it did me when I lost my great grandmother. Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, “ In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” During this despicable time frame, the German people were silent about the disappearances and brutality toward the Jewish, because, mostly, it did not apply to them. Although, some Germans did go against Hitler’s propaganda and opinions, most did not. The same silence has filled our nation today. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe is having a keystone pipeline being built under their sacred lake and land. The tribe is uncomfortable with having a pipeline under their lake, because it could potentially affect their drinking water. Even though scientists say it is safe to consume, it could possibly still be dangerous and harmful in the future. Americans and especially the current administration are not saying a word to help with their situation. Equally, just like the Germans, it does not disturb our everyday lives, so we continue to ignore this
