Reflection On New London Rotation

Improved Essays
The New London rotation was a wonderful opportunity to see not only different areas of nursing that I have the opportunity to go into, but also to truly experience and see what patients are going through when they enter a hospital setting due to presenting symptoms or for a surgery. I was able to experience people’s panic and distress when they enter the emergency department and found it particularly enlightening to be able to see how the staff addressed the patient’s increased emotions as well as the emotions of the individuals who were bringing the patients in. I believe it is incredibly important to learn how to correctly identify individual’s emotions, especially in a high stress situation, and be able to address them appropriately. Personally, I don’t not know how to correctly go about in addressing these types of situations and always find it helpful to learn from others who have been doing this for many years and have great experience with it. In both rotations I learned so much more than I thought that I would in the 5 days that I that I was going to be there. I find it difficult to choose …show more content…
I was taught key words and actions that patients would respond to and associate with a safe environment. I also found it interesting how the patient nursing priorities can change between the different phases of the process depending on the patients differ reactions to the different situations, as well as how the staff reacted to the different situations. The staff was so informative on each step of the process in addition to educating me on what the different possible reactions were to different situation as well as the expected and normal responses. The perioperative rotation for me, was the most educational part of my experience at New London

NRSG 370 Clinical Speciality Elective – Peri-operative Care As the world population is aging, the requirement of surgical services continues to increase as well. At the same time, there have been nursing shortages internationally and nationally in Australia in recent years (Schluter, Seaton & Chaboyer, 2011). My most favorite skill that I learned was the different type of lifts and how to use them, there were 2 lifts that were shown, the sit to stand lift and the manual patient lift. The sit to stand lift not only uses a machine to help the resident stand and sit, but the resident also helps, this benefits them physiologically and…

INTRODUCTION Continuity of care is an essential objective promoted in nursing practice (Messam and Pettifer, 2009) and the indispensable component in achieving an effective transfer of patient’s care between health practitioners are often referred to as clinical handover (Evan et al., 2012). The term ‘handover’ is acknowledged as a moment of making a significant transition in maintaining patients’ continuity of care which involves a process whereby a patient is ‘handed over’ from one clinician to another (Anderson et al., 2010). In a hospital survey conducted in 2009 on patient safety-culture, 49% of the participants who were hospital staff reported that relevant patient care information where often lost during the process of shift changes…

As most of you know I recently went from being a psychiatric nurse at a youth residential center to a long-term care/ skilled care facility. As a psychiatric nurse of ten years, I was excited about the much-needed change. I was hired in as an assistant nurse manager and received one week of training and I was on my own. I was very anxious, to say the least, my first weekend flying solo, yet I was excited about the challenge. This weekend experience was the first thing that came to my mind for this discussion board for effectively managing a rapidly changing situation.…

The character of a nurse is just as important as the knowledge she possesses. The impact of traumatic events on nurses is a far bigger problem then what people say about it. Some nurses become affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) very early in their careers even after being a nurse for a few years. Post Traumatic Syndrome, a common term used mostly around military personnel but, PTSD has become a bigger problem in the last decade in the medical field.…
