As Yi sat on a chair, upright and alert, I wondered what she had gone through in order to become so confident, the hard days and nights she studied, the pressure on her to excel, the “pressure of getting a good grade for the exam”. She smelled fresh and soapy as we started discussing the details and events in her life.
“Very content”, she answered as I asked her about her regrets in life. She has no regrets, she just lives her life no matter what happens. Even though she had to suffer through inadequate housing and fate determining examinations in Taiwan, she was fine with it. When she moved to America with a minimal understanding of English because she wanted to help her grandfather that got a stroke, she was still accepting of the circumstances and lived life as well as she was able to. Like with Rukmani, my mother tried to maintain a positive mood, no matter what circumstances she was in and what she had to sacrifice. In a place where my mother had trouble communicating, she had to find a way to better her English communication skills. Since her parents barely understood any English, my mother had to become a strong, independent woman and find her own way to get through life in America. The way she found was most effective was watching sitcoms on television. Becoming independent from her parents bolstered her confidence, partially contributing to the person she is today. Many immigrant women come here in hopes of a better life, even though a lot of them are not fluent in English. They must also find a way to learn English in order to communicate. By going through struggles, people get
