Reflection On NA Meeting

Transportation to this particular meeting was just as easy as the first meeting. I was able to use my own vehicle to transport myself back and forth to the meeting. I also used a global positioning system (GPS) to assist with finding the location to the meeting facility. Despite by accessible transportation, I do understand there could be potential barriers that could prevent other persons into attending this meeting. The first barrier could be the use of a personal vehicle. While, I am blessed to have my own personal and working vehicle, I am reminded that others do not have this possibility. Another barrier that could arise is the ability to financially pay for gas to use a car. Lastly, local transit does not allow me to go to this particular meeting from my house. I felt excited for the opportunity to learn and observed an area of interest within my social work practice. In addition, I was excited to see if the population of members would resemble that of the NA meeting. On the other hand, I was nervous if I would be accepted as such a meeting. I wondered if I appeared too prestigious in which it would hindered my ability to connect with the members of the group. Despite my reservations, I reminded myself that a person’s outside appearance does not tell their story. With this understanding, I was able to break down that personal bias. I walked into the meeting expecting to learn the evolution of how each group member starting drinking. I believed that this meeting would also allow me to see how the journey to recovery is an everyday task. In addition, I expected the meeting to be large despite the time frame of the meeting.
