Reflection On My Writing Style

Improved Essays
I learned a lot more than what I thought I would from this course. As I look back on my first assignments, I know I couldn't have absorbed everything that was being taught, but I realize now that I have developed an important skill set. I have also learned how to be more clear and concise as an effective writer. These writing principles that we discussed throughout this course helped me to be more critical of my work, evaluating based on the clarity of the presented material and how it is received by the desired audience. This has been the most appreciated course I have taken because it has provided me with the concrete information that can be applied to other academic areas.

The differences between the style of writing that I do to friends and family and the style of writing to instructors are quite distinct. When writing to family and friends, it’s much more informal and not nearly as structured as it would be if I were to write to instructors. It would be similar to how I would talk to them in person and I would use words that would be deemed informal to more professional type people. When I ever do have to write to professionals such as instructors, it would be structured as if I was writing a report or an essay. Being formal when writing to people such as instructors or supervisors is necessary to seem more professional yourself.…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

Have You Developed a System of Writing That Works Most of The Time I really have not looked up different styles of writing let alone realized there was so many different types of it. My method is not necessarily a method per se, I have always for the longest time just wrote down as if I was speaking to someone. That to me was where my biggest praise came from, that I was able to write with such voice and was able to emulate my presence through the pages. When writing for an essay there is a period where I read and reread the question to gather all the information that is needed. Once the question is fully understood, I try to explain myself in full detail.…

Knowing I had to aim for a different audience this time around really affected my writing. When my tone for the original paper was rather informal and even somewhat fun, now I had to write for the APA, a group of people who take this line of work very seriously (as they should). Due to this, I gave my arguments a more serious tone, and I even expanded my vocabulary a bit to give a good impression. If I want the APA to listen to me, I should write in a tone they would use. I was careful about the sources I used for this.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

Throughout this course, writing took more than just writing about what you read. Here I learned to process all the information that needs to be processed and come up with some way to get it out on paper. With writing I have learned that vocabulary and grammar are two very affective sides to it. With grammar I have learned when to end a sentence.
