Reflection On My Rhetoric Course

Over the course of my first semester at the University of Iowa, I, like many of my classmates and friends, have changed. University is probably the biggest sweeping change that occurs to young adults of our age in America, willingly going away, sometimes hundred or thousands of miles away from your family to seek a higher education. It can be a stressful and hectic new step in life, but I especially think it will be a rewarding experience overall, not just because of the degree you get at the end of it, but because of the opportunity it can afford for many to really experience academic passion like never before in high school. This semester has taught me a lot about myself, both as a person and as a student, my abilities to work and think critically, …show more content…
These involve things like awkward phrasing at points, which can be remedied by reading my papers aloud, or just being more careful with my sentence structure, as my sentences can become jumbled at times. I would also still like to improve my use of textual quotes, being able to pick out and use quotes that truly solidify my …show more content…
If I had to pick a favorite “unit”, I would say individual poetry presentation. My friend and I did a very similar group presentation on Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan” in highschool, still one of my favorite poems. This project inspired me to very vigorously read and listen to reading of the poems, and similar to the one in highschool, inspired a lot of excited anxiety and a feeling of accomplishment. Mark Strand has quickly been growing in interest for me, and I intend to take up much more of his poetry over the winter break, my current favorite being “The Mysterious Arrival of an Unusual

The rhetoric in practice project is the second major assignment within the class in which we have to create a work of our own choice and convey some sort of message about Carpe-diem. This project was created in order for us to display our understanding of rhetoric and carpe-diem along with our ability to put them to practice. This project was the first that had me really focus on our course theme of Carpe-diem. Throughout the course we covered many different works that conveyed their own interpretation of Carpe-diem. However there are a few similarities that they all share; that being their negative view of time/future, the lack of faith in a deity or fate, and that the ultimate goal in life is pleasure.…

The play begins when fourteen people are now accused of being witches. The plot of play gets bizarre as more people are now being convicted of practicing witchcraft and the witch hunting spreads in Salem. Eventually, the witch hunting lands on Proctor’s house when the court arrests Elizabeth for possessing a doll that Mary has gave her, which Abigail has accused her of. Abigail in Act 2 exercise a great sum of power which frustrates Proctor who criticizes the court of blindly trusting the accusers. The act ends when the Proctor tries to persuade Mary in court on behalf of Elizabeth, but Mary refuses to do so because she wants to protect Proctor’s reputation.…

    1. Why does the text suggest many people think of Rhetoric as a dirty word? Give examples from the text to support your response. The text suggests that many people think of Rhetoric as a dirty word because it invokes the feelings of deception, sneakiness, and deceitfulness. Rhetoric, the existence of persuasion in writing or speaking, a powerful tool that shapes the way writers and readers interact. Also the base of a rhetorical situation, or a situation that is brought about by communication of a want to fulfill an action. The poem above, which I wrote for a 12th grade English assignment, is a perfect example of a rhetorical situation, clearly portraying the interaction between the rhetor, audience, exigence, and constraints. I choose to review the rhetoric of this piece because the poem is memorable to me as it is both the first and only poem I have ever written, it was very challenging to write, and even to this day I am still extremely pleased with the final outcome. As a summary, this poem consists of two stanzas regarding the Arab Spring and it 's aftermath; the first stanza covering the propaganda of a corrupt government “Speaking of words with empty lines” and the want for truth by the citizens under tyranny leading to a revolution of the mind “Seeking the truth, turning the tide”.…

Works of writing will vary a lot based on the audience and the style of the paper. That is why it is important to adapt your writing to the specific assignment or project. Most of the time I find myself writing rhetorically on accident. Although some instances in high school I remember specific guidelines for example to not use I in papers. This is to adapt to the audience because when you are doing a research paper, the reader doesn’t care about what you think or what you believe.…

Dhanishka Pohuja Professor Linda King English 1A- 40396 30 September 2015 Against School Essay: Prompt One “Divide children by subject, by age-grading, by constant rankings on tests, and by many other more subtle means, and it was unlikely that the ignorant mass of mankind, separated in childhood, would ever reintegrate into a dangerous whole (Gatto 3). ” It might be appalling to you to even read such a statement from Alexander Inglis, cutting students by the masses and grouping them into categories, however, what is more appalling is that subconsciously and unknowingly this is what has been happening in most schools. Ironically, in school students are taught to be open minded, nonjudgmental, and accepting of one another when in fact the school…

We go through our day-to-day lives, and see rhetoric everywhere. However, we never pause and look at something and think to our selves why we think its rhetoric. Rhetoric needs to provide the three following appeals in a balanced way: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. This past year’s super bowl featured a commercial in which comedian Kevin Hart sends his daughter off on her first date. The commercial shows the first date and the events that the couple does while Kevin Hart is following them with the new feature that his Hyundai Genesis has.…

I set goals at the beginning of this class - goals I wanted to achieve by the end of this semester. After looking back at the sheet of paper where these goals were written on, I realized that they had all been accomplished. Also, after reviewing the essays I wrote before, I noticed that the most recent essays had gotten better and more improved. My goals created at the beginning of this semester when this class began were to improve my vocabulary and mechanics, learn to use citations, stay on focus, and have fun, rather than looking at writing essays as a school assignment that has to be done. Some skills have improved more than others, but in an overall outlook, all the skills I wanted to improve on had gotten noticeably better.…

Looking back onto my first day off class, I realize how my knowledge has grown immensely. I am now able to take the lessons I learned in class and apply my new knowledge in all situations of writing. To begin, the class strongly focused on rhetoric, therefore, my understanding of rhetoric expanded greatly. I can now apply rhetoric strategies, such as appealing to pathos, to a variety of genres because of my experience in writing expository, persuasive, and academic pieces. With my new understanding of rhetoric I am able to support my claim and organize my argument to appeal to the audience and be the most effective.…

I’ve learned a lot since being in college, mostly how to take charge of my life and get my priorities straight.
