Reflection On Mrs. Herd

Improved Essays
During my observation in Mrs. Herd’s first grade class I directed two assessments to four students. The assessments were the Yopp-Singer Test of Phoneme Segmentation and Rosner Test of Auditory Analysis. Before administering the assessments to the four students I made a point to set myself up for it. A few ways I set myself up was reading more about the assessments, watching some videos on how to conduct the tests, and furthermore doing a practical assessment to my friend’s child. I wanted to assure myself that I was well prepared to examine the students because I didn’t want to make any errors while examining the students and have them repeat the examination again. I could envision how the students may have felt while a stranger testing them so I wanted to make it pleasant and comfortable for them. I administered the assessment in Mrs. Herd’s class while she was doing her lesson. Mrs. Herd’s class, for the most part comprises of ESOL levels 3 and 4 so she isolated two students from every level. She wanted me to able to compare how each student did in their ESOL level. Mrs. Herd separated the four students into a group and one by one I called them to sit at a separate desk with me. Immediately, I saw the students were strained and befuddled to what was going on. I explained …show more content…
I took after the same methods I did on the Rosner evaluation. I explained the instructions to the students and performed a couple examples with them. I explained to them I was going to commence by saying a word and then they were going to break the word apart and tell me each sound in the word in order. Both students reacted especially well to the Yopp evaluation. I believe I was well prepared to assess the four students. I made sure to read more about the assessments, I viewed some videos on how to conduct the exam and as well performed a practice assessment to my friend’s

Two examples of other informal reading assessments are the Phonics Mastery Survey and Phonemic Awareness Assessments. The Phonics Mastery Survey is an informal tool for assessing various phonics elements. This assessment measures a student’s ability to recognize consonant sounds, rhyming words, consonant digraphs, long vowel sounds, words with CVC patterns, consonant blends, variant vowel sounds, and syllables in words (DeVries 2011 p.112). A student’s ability to use knowledge of sound/letter correspondences to decode words, determines his or her ability to read individual words. Knowing the skills that the students possess will assist the teacher in selecting reading tasks that offer the most effective reinforcement of those phonics skills.…

Analysis of Running Records The names below are the names of the students that I have assessed by performing running records according to their instructional reading level. Kelly, Lilly, Roxanne, and Andres are reading below grade level, they are English Language Learners and they are in an all English instruction classroom. For all four students, I used reading assessments from the McGraw-Hill Website which provided me reading passages with two questions at the end to check for comprehension. Since my students are reading at different reading levels, I had to provide them with different reading passages based on their reading levels, I used a total of two different passages since I have two students reading at first grade level, and the…

I took that passage and stayed with fluency and comprehension, but I also added in learning strategies for difficult vocabulary terms that are in the passage. Pre-Assessment: The student will read the Susan B. Anthony article in one minute. The teacher will high-light each of the words that were incorrect in that one minute and add up how many words the student read correctly.…

In order to create a nurturing environment, Kaleigh and I took the student outside of the classroom and conducted the interview sitting in the hallway. The student had mentioned how she wanted to sit in the hall, so we chose an environment where she felt comfortable. The Spinnelli article highlighted how many times, standardized assessments are invalid because, “ELLs frequently have little experience taking tests and become anxious, confused, or have difficulty controlling their attention” (Spinnelli, 2009, pg. 103). To make sure that the information the student was providing us was accurate and that she understood the questions correctly, we wanted to ensure that she felt comfortable in the environment that we would be interviewing her.…

For example will assessment be initial/pre course, formative, summative or based on recognised prior learning. The assessor will need to decide the methods or activities to be used for assessment such as observations, performance evidence, discussion or witness/learner statement. How knowledge and understanding is going to be assessed also needs careful thought and could include tests, multiple choice questions, written assignment/task, a reflective journal, verbal questioning or naturally occurring evidence, all of which need to be fit for purpose and relate to the learner’s specific needs. Further considerations for assessment planning are to determine who will be assessing the learning/learner and how progress will be monitored and reviewed following feedback. 3.2 Evaluate the benefits of using a holistic approach to…

Following the Krathwohl and Developmental Assessment (Griffin, 2014), I believe my current Zone of Proximal Development should be at the “Organizing” stage. At the start of the semester, I identified my ZDP the stage as “Responding”, as I was willing to passively receive information and attended all the learning environment, and while completing assessments following the formal requirements, I was not always engaged in discussion in the tutorials. Luckily, the natural of the very first assignment, the group constructed rubric, had greatly helped me to overcome the “participates in discussions” item of the “Responding” level. Throughout several active group discussions, we cooperatively finished the task, and I developed the confidence to participation…

She used recognition checks that required students to give her a thumbs up or down if they understood or not and she also used verbal check such as “what do you do when the music stops” ? As an observer of the class I think it was easy to see how the teacher implemented assessments in the lesson. For example the K-W-L graphic organizer used as an assessment helped students to monitor their learning about the topic while creating a visual representation that kept the students engaged. In my opinion this connects directly to the course discussion from week one. From observing the lesson it was clear that the teacher was purposeful in planning her assessments and when she used them.…

I used the data collected from the assessments to identify and improve his learning as well as guide my decisions for instruction during the next session. The goal was to increase his score by at least five points each test in order to improve learning. 10.…
