Reflection On Miracle Hill

Decent Essays
During my first visit to Miracle Hill, I had the opportunity to assist and help the elder community. This experience exposed me to the reality of what these individuals are daily living, and taught me that nursing is more than giving medication and changing dressings; nursing has the power of making people feel better even when it is almost impossible.
My assigned patient was Ms. L. She is a 97 years old lady and it has been approximately 3 months since she moved to the facility. She has a pacemaker and was always using oxygen. During this past visit she was talking to me about her life and how she was the one who decided to move to the nursing home; a really hard decision to make since she was always against the idea of living in this kind

While reading My Stroke of Insight, I was astonished by Jill Bolte Taylor’s positive outlook with her CVA and how well she recovered. Thoughts raced continuously throughout my mind with each page that I read in her book. Each chapter amazed me more. As an instructor, I would have my students to ask themselves whether they felt that Jill’s positive standpoint with her condition affected her overall recovery along with the time duration, if they think that the people surrounding Jill affected her recovery with how they treated her, and why do they think Jill waited so long to seek help while she was experiencing signs of a CVA? People have said that the outlook one has on life can affect life itself.…

Eventually we flagged her down and she didn’t even remember where she was going, she said that she felt as if she was driving without a destination. Her exact words were “I wanted to go home, but I didn’t know where home was.” Not long after this we took her to the doctor, they gave her some pills and sent her home. But as time passed, she got worse, her organs were failing and her body was retaining water. Eventually they put her in Ruffing Nursing Home, right across from where her and my grandfather lived.…

In this scenario I used Bevis’ tool of caring. Bevis defines caring as a relationship build on the total awareness of oneself and others, it goes beyond just the limits of illness and into finding the full human potential (Foley, 2009). I used caring throughout my situation by building a therapeutic-relationship with my patient. I did not let my disappointment or my feelings towards my co-assign interfere with our interactions. I made sure to frequently check on her after the catheter had been removed to ask how her first void had went.…

Becoming an AGPCNP will provide me with the knowledge and training to safely and effectively treat adult patients across the lifespan. Although I entered this program planning to work as an FNP, experiences during the pre-specialty year have confirmed my passion for the adult patient. Specifically, I hope to serve rural communities as a primary care provider, focusing my practice on the management of chronic disease in older adults. My passion for older adults is rooted in the experiences I had throughout the summers of my undergraduate career. I spent my summers with a nonprofit in rural North Carolina partnering with churches, social workers, and businesses to complete home repair for low-income families.…

I began to realize, these people were not broken objects without meaning or purpose. They could not be defined by their bodies, ages, or aliments. They could only be defined by their lives, passions, and purposes. Through my experiences with the inspiring residents during my first fieldwork, I was able to learn that everyone has a story to share; however, to see this you have to look past their external appearances. Antoine de Saint Exupery once said, “One sees clearly only with the heart.…

Florence Nightingale, born 1820, placed a major influence on creating nursing as a career not just the responsibility of the female guardians (McDonald, 2013). Before the age of Nightingale, nursing was derived from popular culture, however, as the year’s progressed nursing slowly transformed into a career choice (Daly, Speedy & Jackson, 2015). At the age of 20 she began her nursing career, for many years she traveled the world, spending time in hospitals and healthcare setting, allowing her to know to help treat patients across the world. During 1857, Nightingale began her journey into establishing training schools for others that had a similar passion within nursing and caring for others (McDonald, 2013). Perfusion/Oxygenation Ms. Crocker has poor profusion due to her heart failure. Her heart condition is not very advanced at this time, but is contributing to some peripheral tissues not getting as much blood. The reason for this is that the heart is putting out less blood and so the body wants to make sure that the vital organs are getting the blood supply first before/over the peripheries. Due to her COPD when the oxygen was turned up too high, she would begin to have a decreased level of consciousness. This is because her lungs are not used to that much oxygen and will begin to retain carbon dioxide, causing respiratory acidosis.…

The second thing I wish had been different is that I wish that I had learned more about how to talk about sensitive subjects, when I came back from the session I took a minute to read the chapter in the NIA booklet “Talking with your Older Patient” about sensitive subjects, but I did not seem to find the answers I wanted. When talking with our resident I realized that she had experienced a lot of loss in her life, her son, her grandson, and her sister. Although she played it off like it was not a big deal to her, I wish that I had known how to approach the conversation of asking what happened and what was your favorite memory with this person, instead of just letting her play it off. I think that many of her losses were long ago, so she…

These include how groups function, impact of trust on group cohesiveness and how motivation and locus of control can influence the behaviour of an individual. My experience in the simulation has taught me the importance of group cohesiveness, as I feel it is critical in goal achievement. Also realized the importance of motivation and external locus of control to help achieve the desired outcome.…
