Reflection On Minne Luha

Improved Essays
During my nursing 340 clinical experience I had the opportunity to go to Minne Lusa school and help give health screenings to each kid there. Before I had never been to Minne Lusa so I had no idea to what to expect walking into this school. My first initial reaction was that there were a lot of kids who lived in poverty. Just by the way the kids acted and dressed as well as responded to us nursing students, you could tell they were struggling. At Minne Lusa we did a lot of health screenings with the students and you could tell that a lot of the kids were not in good health. Kids even went to the extent of telling us how hungry they were because they hadn't eaten that day. This was definitely an eye opening experience for me and made me realize …show more content…
I knew this before I went to Minne Lusa but I had never seen poverty this bad before. Before it was more of just a general idea that I had from stories or experiences told to me. However, to actually be there, in the school, watching all these kids suffering was a whole other experience. It made me open my eyes and view poverty on a different level than I had viewed it before. Looking at these kids makes a person realize why change is needed in these schools. Kids are suffering everyday from starvation and that is not okay. Like stated before, Methodist has done a lot to help Minne Lusa but I feel like there is more that can be done. This experience contributed to the development of being a change agent in many ways. It made me realize that not all schools in Omaha are wealthy, and generally most of them do not have a lot of money. It always gave me a better view on how poor Omaha really is. It changed my whole view on poverty in Omaha. My goals are to be able to continue to grow as a change agent. Instead of just being able to pick out experiences that change my view, I also want to contribute more actions to be a better change agent. I want to be able to physically help others and not just say I want to help

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

One of the most remarkable volunteer experiences that I have ever had a chance to participate in was a PULSE program held by Cooper Medical School. This premedical summer program was crucial to my understanding of human health and it afforded me with a totally new perspective on my future career as a physician: a desire to practice in an underserved area because I had a chance to witness the degree to which some citizens are in need of proper medical care and yet most of them have nowhere to go due to the lack of primary care offices in the area. PULSE program was concentrated on service learning as one of the primordial sources in understanding the community in which Cooper Medical School is located and the health trends of its residents. This information could be of much value for physicians who practice in the area because it allows…

Being a member of this distinguished society is what I have strived towards since elementary school. Watching presentations and hearing stories from individuals in high school from a young age (who were at the time active National Honor Society members), inspired the archetype that I aspired to be –the archetype of an individual who shares the four characteristics that National Honor Society stands for: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Throughout my high school career, I worked towards the scholarship aspect. Despite where I am currently, my freshman year had not gone as well as I hoped it would.…

When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…

Rawsi Williams once stated, “To do what nobody else will do, a way that nobody else can do, in spite of all we go through; that is to be a Nurse.” Rawsi Williams’s words truly defines who a nurse is. A nurse is not an individual who just cares and treats patients, but a nurse is who goes above and beyond to fulfill his/her obligations of helping others. As a nurse, I hope to work and make a change in Woman’s Health. Through my working experience as Mother-Baby nurse in Houston Area and volunteering in El Paso, I have observed that several females neglects to take care of their health.…

This question has helped shape my personal values and principles and directed my path into the nursing field. When I was little, I wanted to be a chemist. I imagined myself in the lab coat and with goggles on, carefully pouring electric blue liquids and jade green foam back and forth into various containers, until something had exploded and I had discovered the best way to make flowers the size of people. As I grew up, I lost this fantasy, but I gained more knowledge on how I wanted to influence the world. Funnily enough, I discovered what I really wanted to do when I started working at Chick-fil-A during the summer before my sophomore year. All of my friends had warned me against working in fast food, quoting horrible smells and ridiculous customers and tons of grease.…
