Media Literacy Assessment Based on the Media Literacy Circle of Empowerment my skill of awareness, analysis activism, and access have greatly changed my media literacy over the course of the semester.
As I look at different types of media and now I become more aware of the message the media is trying to get across. Often times the media persuades viewers to think in specific ways, specifically, agenda setting theory would suggest how the media persuades viewers by telling them what to think about and influence their viewers. I have become aware that media is most often used to communicate cultural messages and inform people. I didn’t realize all the different sites where people could share their thoughts. The main social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Yik Yak, but thousands of more!
Course Reflection Over the course of the semester we have learned a variety of things about communication in the media. The most memorable thing that I learned was about television and how it has evolved over time and how the future of TV is leaning towards Web TV. Learning about television is most memorable to me because I typically watch television everyday either on a physical TV or on the computer. Also, I grew up watching TV in my living room everyday after school. As I grew older I continued to watch TV but began to watch it on my computer through Netflix because it was more efficient.
I consider TV socially important because it’s a conversation started and connects people to others. By having friends that watch the same TV shows it allows for social events to occur and constant conversation. Also, people can live tweet others from all over the world while live watching the …show more content…
As we talked about the evolution of television, Andrea was aware that it started with the radio because she “used to watch The Walton’s (an old time show) on television and they would use the radio for entertainment, news and sports.” While Hanna had no idea that entertainment, sports and news where originally broadcasted on the radio due to the fact that she grew up watching TV to get her entertainment, sports and news.
As we further discussed this topic I brought up the point about how shows often follow the theme of what is old is new again and create shows with common themes. I asked them both if they thought TV shows were based off the same common themes. Andrea said, “I agree that TV shows use common themes for a variety of shows, but I don’t like that they continue to try a reinvent old stories like all the Cinderella stories.” Andrea took this idea that they have the same story and recreate it in multiple versions. I asked Hanna and she said, “When I think of common themes I understand it as all programs are trying to entertain the audience”. Although, she didn’t think the programs used the same common
