Personal Narrative: My Job Shadow

Improved Essays
My Job Shadow was October 7th, 2017, at Waldo County General Hospital. Waldo County General Hospital is a small hospital in Belfast, Maine. The RN I had followed was named John, he use to work for the military, so he had a lot of experience in different aspects of nursing. He works with my mom in the Intensive Care Unit. I got there around 6:00 am, and was stuck there for the whole work day, because my mom brought me to my job shadow and she also had to work. The day was pretty slow for the most part, a lot of the patients had been discharged. However, since the day was slow in the ICU, and I was going to be there all day, I was allowed to job shadow a Wound Care nurse. Which was really interesting, because I got to see a different career within nursing. What was really surprising to me about the RN role was how calm they maintained themselves in different …show more content…
So, not only are you taking care of your patients, you also have to be open to helping other nurses with their patients. You're also responsible to document things correctly. I got to see how they used there online system for documenting, and there were things about a certain patient who was NPO, but the patient was doing much better, and the nurses weren't sure if they were suppose to feed him or not. So, the RN talked to the Physician, and got the permission to give the patient food. I can't really pinpoint any examples of the RN using nursing ethics, they probably just weren't apparent to me. However, I believe one example of ethics would be for the elderly patient with the perforated bowel would be they had to decide whether to push her through surgery, or whether hospice would be the better option. Even though the nurses felt they should try surgery, they waited for the patient and their family's consent on what to do. There were no spiritual or cultural issues. None of the patients asked for spiritual care when they were admitted to the

Clarence, I agree with you completely that older generations follow the motto “a hard day’s work for an honest day’s pay”. I work with a few older employees and they work 5x harder than some of the younger employees I work with. I also received a 35 on my EI test which I was not surprised of either. I have a very high work ethic and have very little time for play in my job. I do need to learn to put myself in others shoes; sometimes this is very hard for me to do.…

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

I have always been interested in learning and using new ideas. Throughout my life, I have invariably drawn from my life experiences, newly learned ideas and my continuing education to help problem-solve sensibly and realistically allowing me to move forward or help others reach their goals. Although I have no formal teaching experience, in my past work and involvement in organized sports, I have repeatedly used the Progressive philosophy. When dealing with 13 & 14 year olds many situations arise such as bullying, personality clashes or simply not understanding a drill or play. I deal with these situations by asking questions to stimulate a discussion, allowing them to draw on past experiences; positive or negative, consequently allowing them to come up with a solution or grasp the knowledge they are seeking.…

I learned the computer information as well. An RN even stood next to me and showed me how to chart when my patient was discharged. The biggest thing that happened today and impacted me a lot was I did CPR for the very first time. I was just working on my documentation when a nurse came to our floor and told us to drop what we were doing and follow her, well we ended up in the ER. I will never forget this moment it was scary because it was my first time, but at the same time my adrenaline went through the rough.…

During my attendance to the Seattle Children’s Hospital Nursing Camp, I job shadowed multiple Registered Nurses in the Cancer Care Unit, Medical Floor, Operating Room, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In each department, I was able to observe the daily tasks of a nurse and how they interact with different patients. Not only did I job shadow nurses, but I also learned how to different procedures, such as: how to replace a trachea device, take blood pressures, insert feeding tubes, and how to inject vitamins and foods into feeding tubes. Through this, I assured myself that I really wanted to be a nurse.…

There is a set of principles that we as nurses are obligated to follow. It is imperative that nurses are aware of legal issues so they stay within their scope of practice and comply with the state and federal regulations. Ultimately, the goal in making an ethical decision is to list all the options out and to choose between the possible treatments choices while recognizing different viewpoints. Nurses must advocate for what is the best for the patient above all else regardless if we do not agree. Coping and prevention strategies can be implemented by the nurse managers to prevent moral distress.…
