Reflection On J Cole's 'A Child Called It'

Part 1: In “A Child Called It” there were a lot of intense moments that leaves the reader emotionally disturbed. One that stands out most to me is when the main character, David, was going over a week without eating in many different occasions but, his mother eventually decided to feed him. David is given a plate and right before he is able to even touch the food it is smacked off the table by his mother and he lost his opportunity to eat. The moment I read that part of the story, so many different questions rushed through my head. I was angry at David’s mother and frustrated for David that he had to live this life. The name of the song is “Love Yourz” by J Cole and the entire meaning behind it is to try and have a different outlook on life and appreciate what you have because someone out there will always have it harder than you and another person who is living in a better situation than you. The song also discusses the frustration there is in seeing someone more fortunate than you and wanting more but the song repeats one line that makes the listener have a different perspective on their life. The line says “No such thing as a life that’s better than yours,” but, in David’s case this line is hard to believe since he is definitely in a less fortunate situation. He also goes through the frustration of seeing his siblings and friends being fortunate enough to receive love from his mother. There is also another lyric in the song that fits David’s faith throughout the story because it constantly is tested by his mom. J Cole says “I asked for strength from the Lord up above ‘cause I’ve been strong so far but I can feel my grip loosening.” and David mentions his hope in life weakening the more he endures his
