Reflective Essay On Inter-Professional Education

Inter-professional education is a vital step in improving the overall quality of healthcare by providing students from different professional backgrounds with the skills and knowledge needed to work collaboratively in a clinical practice. Furthermore, the world health organization believe that “multi-professional learning leads to better inter-professional working” as “students appreciate the importance of personalities and interpersonal skills” (WHO, 2013). Barriers to inter-professional practice, such as lack of communication, can lead to deaths as seen in the case of the maternity unit of a Cumbrian hospital, which resulted in the deaths of 11 babies and a mother. Failure in saving lives due to incongruence, power relations, time limitations and lack of teamwork highlights the need for inter-professional practice. In this essay, I will explore the art of communication, goals and role performance and reflect on how these factors affected our group presentation for the FIPP module this semester.

This will allow me to be a better team player and work in a more composed manner when interacting with patients. Clearer goals and better time management would also help with reducing the stress. Having no prior experience or knowledge into the different professions I worked with, I often judged them due to stereotypes associated with their professions. Through working in collaboration with other professions, I have now learnt not to make hasty generalizations (Fischer, 1970). In the future, I will also recognize the benefits of active listening. It has taught me what the “speaker’s body language and tone are conveying, are both vital aspects of face-to-face communication” (Shouse, 2008).
