Reflection On High School English Class

Improved Essays
High School English class was just filled with reading assignment, quizzes, and essays. During English 1101 I learned more than just how to write an essay and about the plot of a story. I learned about how culture, communication, writing style, and the way we look at visual information has changed. I have learned how to interpret this changing world of media and culture through uses of multimodal methods during this course. Along the way I developed my knowledge and ability to communicate in written methods, oral methods, visual methods, electronic methods, and in non-verbal methods. I learned how to read Visual text and I learned how to record and upload a video to YouTube. I became more familiar with using google docs to communicate and work …show more content…
In the first week of class we had to work on the common week assignment and create a video verbal response to the book Garbology by Humes. I had to compose a script and practice the ability to vocally present my script while being recorded. The recording process took a lot longer than expected because of my lack of practice remembering a script and my ability to speak clearly and articulate my words to be understood. This extra time put into developing my video helped me develop my oral communication skills as well. In Artifact 2 we had to talk about our infographic on a gallery viewing day and I had to know the information so I could talk about the infographic without having to read directly off of the infographic. I learned it really helps to know the information in depth in order to be able to speak confidently and for an extended period of time. I also had to help write the script for Artifact 3 the video essay where along the way I learned how to use pauses and many other things in order to make the script flow as it is being recited out …show more content…
I learned the importance of class discussions and listening to others during class events such as the gallery walk. Non-verbal communication is very important because it has many more variables than standard written English. You have to keep in mind factors such as body language when giving a speech or background and other subtle touches when making a YouTube video. In order to fully understand the information being presented to you and why it is being presented to you. You have to listen to your professor and fellow classmate to show respect and it gains you the respect of others when you can listen and then give an appropriate response. We also observed the differences of attitude in different environments in our culture today such as when you are in a museum you act differently than you would typically with your friends. No one tells you to be quite and calm when in a museum or church but from observing the behavior of others you can simply tell the way in which you are expected to act. In English 1101 my class was fortunate enough to visit the High Museum of Art here in Atlanta and we got to experience firsthand how an environment can change the way in which you

For example, we worked on our rough drafts in and we took the opportunity for Mr. Dutt go over it with us individually, he taught us how to express ourselves in the correct format that we are writing an essay and we read some essays that were very interested. Working on my rough draft with enough time like we were given, helped me write down all my thoughts calmly. Once I was done I could proof read it to make sure if I need to fix or add something else. An academic experience that I have completed that has helped me make progress toward my goals is the Honors 110 speech and communication class. When I first started college, I was very uncomfortable speaking in front of others and I stumbled upon my words when I talked to people with authority. From that course, I learned that I was good at memorization and the synthesis of different knowledge and ideas. In our persuasive speech, we were to have actions that college students could do to bring change about topic. From that experience, it showed me the importance of civic engagement in bring about change and spurring others to action and knowledge creation in trying to solve problems.…

This semester, I have learned a lot from this English 101 course. I have not only learned from you, but also from my peers and myself. Entering this class, I had a good understanding of what this course was about because I took a pre-English class over the summer. Although I feel it provided me with a decent grasp of the course, the material of pre-English was condensed into six weeks, so there was still a lot left to learn. English 101 was very beneficial because it helped strengthen my writing as it also gave me an introduction to college writing.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

This has increased my learning habits. My student habits have changed dramatically,…

My first placement took place at a special educational needs (SEN) secondary school where I was employed as a teaching assistant. My duties were varied as I would often help children who struggled with the work because of their disabilities but also perform menial tasks such as photocopying. However by doing all of this I gained valuable experience of working in a school, knowledge of learning difficulties and improved upon many of my transferable skills. Communication skills Throughout my time at the school I improved on my communication skills by using different techniques for the children.…

Verbal and non-verbal communication allows a teacher to effectively communicate with students, maintain classroom management, address appropriate behaviors and expectations, and provide and safe and respectful classroom environment. Verbal communication consists of what a teacher or student says out loud. This includes a teacher directly interacting with her students by verbalizing information through teacher-student communication. When the class is being loud or disruptive, the teacher can talk to the class as a whole to be quiet or redirect their attention. When it a specific student needs to be talked to, the teacher can have one-on-one communication with the student before, during, or after class.…
