Distorted thinking negatively impacts and effects their behaviors and emotions. By assisting the client in recognizing their thought process, improvement in behaviors should occur. Overall, the main goal of CBT is to help clients learn to recognize irrational or negative thought patterns, evaluate their own personal validity, and to ultimately replace the negative thoughts with a healthier way of thinking (Hofmann & Thompson, 2004). In treatment, techniques in CBT can include thought records, pleasant activity scheduling, and goal setting. The articles used measures such as self-report questionnaires, interviews, the Beck Depression Inventory, Grief Cognitions Questionnaire, the DSM-IV, and Ultrecht Coping Lists to asses, diagnosis, and measure depression in the participants (Gould et al.,2012). For these studies, I was somewhat disappointed in how the variables were defined and explained. In terms of the level of expertise for therapist, I would say for the most part they were competent in treatment. In regards to internal validity, in the studies participants were recruited through health care services via advertisement. Participants were then giving interviews randomly placed in control groups or treatment delivery. The studies incorporate wait-list control groups and treatment as usual control groups. The time frame of the measurements in the studies was on average 11 weeks and it doesn’t seem that manipulation of the variables took place. Overall, the quality of the control group in this study helped significantly, and shows that CBT is more effective over other
