Reflection On Angelina Counselor

Decent Essays
As Angelina counselor I would direct the session by first acknowledging that I know that she went through a lot. I would summarize the client story and reflect on what I have received from what she had said. This will indicate that I was paying attention. I would acknowledge that I notice her perseverance because even though she has been overwhelm with a lot she is still pushing through the obstacles. This will give her a level of empowerment with wanting to get through her problems. Next, I would ask her where she want to start so I can meet her where she at and assist her on making a plan or strategy to get through the situation.
My overall reaction to the client story was I first try to empathize on the situation since I am a college student

    C) Describes and mention what you learned about yourself in the process, be specific and give examples? This facilitation experience had given me a huge opportunity within that 35 minutes to learn about my strength and the things I could improve my skills. In Unbroken, Angelina Jolie uses pain and emotion to tell us about world war two and what was happening to not just the soldiers but the people in America and everyone around the world. The main person she talks about is Louis Zamperini, like what his experience was in the war and being a Prisoner of War and how it changed his life for the worst but also for the better. The story starts with telling the beginning of Louis’s life as a kid he was a big troublemaker and the talk of the town as being a kid that you could never trust. I feel like back then this was common for most non-american kids, since Louie was Italian he was treated like he didn’t belong with the other kids.…

We should have gone over them together, making sure that the client understood, that if need be the courts could subpoena her records, so she should only share what she felt comfortable telling. I feel that I came off as genuine, and we established an instant rapport. I engaged my client, I asked her what brought her there. My client went on to inform me that she had recently lost her job. Afterwards she paused briefly.…

I see what you mean about how a counselor word a phrase is as important as important as what the counselor says. I agree with you, it’s not what you say, it’s how you said it. If the client is in a crisis due to a natural disaster, the counselor should not ask the client “what seems to be the issue with you today?” The counselor may be displayed as uncaring or in some other negative way.…

While reflecting over this meeting, I think some very good points surrounding supervision, competencies, and self-awareness was discussed. Countertransference does not just have to be about traumatic experiences the counsellor has endured, but rather any positive or negative thoughts or emotions and/or biased expressions that occur due to the recitation of the client’s story (Briere & Scott, 2015). I also think that supervision is a key component in all counselling, as it is hard to be self-aware to the point of eliminating any blind spots that may exist. Sometimes outside observations of our behaviors can help illuminate even a small blind spot the counsellor may have toward themselves; these observations may be from a supervisor, or as you…

It is in this session that I helped the client to focus on the wider issues around the problem. This I achieved through challenging the client positively by asking him if he thought whether the situation would still have ended the same way it was if he did things differently. I also inquired whether he thought there were reasons that made the individual behave the way she did. These questions also allowed my client to express his emotions regarding the situation which would be helpful for him since he would be able to release the tension he had concerning the situations. This was through talking about the thoughts and the feelings he had stored in his mind.…

In working with this client it is important to understand her resistance. Her underlying cause that are driving her maladaptive behaviors. The client is pushing her husband away by her need to watch his every move and wondering if he is constantly cheating on her. In the client’s case, resistance is serving a purpose of impeding the uncovering of the problem and “once a conflict is reactivated in psychotherapy, they interfere with the renunciation of unconscious wishes and fantasies associated with the conflict” (Manetta, Gentille, & Gillig, 2011). The client is scared to move forward in her relationship because he could cheat again and any kind of good that was done during the time he was cheating would be a lie.…

While managing to present the client with certain challenges that allow them to see the action that needs to be taken, and what can they do in order to bring about change. It is also very necessary to help the clients pinpoint their own personal strengths, understand what’s hindering them from using available resources, and to have them specifically state what they want they want in life and how they want to live it. Professional boundaries/roles on the therapist behalf is to be explicitly stated before the therapy is in session. Maybe also a little clarification of the rules of therapy and what therapy is exactly since individuals tend to have misconstrued information about therapy in general. Some important characteristics that a good counselor should have is the willingness to listen, to provide encouragement, to be empathetic, to be nonjudgmental, to have patience, and to most of all uphold the promise to keep things confidential unless that client is at risk for harming themselves as well as others.…

In the first session, it seemed awkward and somewhat difficult to start the conversation. But eventually after some silence we started a conversation and it led to a topic that I was anticipating on. I was able to speak my mind while I could see her attentively listening to me.
