I attended Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Springfield, Virginia, over the winter break. During the discussion time, the participants shared about how their week had been, what kind of struggles they had, and things that helped them to not turn to alcohol. At the end of the discussion, I got to share about myself as well, and why I was attending the meeting. Even though it was my first time meeting everyone, they were very open and welcoming.
When I first got there, I was surprised because if I had not met the participants outside of the meeting, I would have never guessed that they were struggling with alcoholism. Reflecting back on my initial thoughts and reactions, I realized some of the biases I have towards those who struggle with alcoholism.
