Reflection On African Americans

At first I found this test rather stressful because you had to work fast and I was worried about the results but overall I found the survey interesting but not surprising. My results were that I had, “little to no automatic preference between European American and African American.” I agree with the results in the sense that I’ve never found myself to be too prejudicial towards African Americans or any other race. My personal beliefs lead me to want to be non-prejudicial where as I grew up with parents who taught me not to judge others while they often judged others in front of me. I consider myself to have a decent sociological imagination where I try to live with my “blinders” off and just take everyone as they are despite their race or …show more content…

I go to her church sometimes, I participate in cultural events like parades and ceremonies and I often feel connected to her family’s ethnicity. While throughout the years I’ve found myself teaching her and her family a few “American” things which has helped them assimilate better to living here. I’d say I’ve taught her all kinds of things from correct phrases and etiquette to how my family celebrates holidays. I definitely think that growing up connected to a different culture has aided in me being a more open person to different races and religions. I’d like to think I live most of my life with my blinders off because I’d rather like to interpret a person based on who they are as a whole rather than just where they came from or the color of their skin. It saddens me that there is so much racism and prejudice in this world and I agree with the fact that often a race or religion gets a bad stigma simply for the acts of a small percentage of the actual

Post-Bellum America In post-bellum America was a time where people were to live different lives after slaves being released from slavery. Indians, Blacks, and other diversities were treated differently because they were not white and if they were different they did not deserve any recognition or any type of respect. There was a major problem in post-bellum America was that whites were still against blacks and that they don’t deserve freedom. Over time Blacks thought they were finally going to be equal and that they will have respect. Since Blacks were hated that much there was a group called the KKK that were to rid the blacks by murdering blacks.…

Amid the 1800s, America developed to be a tremendous nation with many individuals longing for calling it home. Sadly for the Local Americans, this implied losing their territory and the hallowed ground they esteem. With the completing of the Cross-country Railroad and entry of laws, for example, the Estate Demonstration, numerous foreigners came to America to improve a life for their families. Since they were seen as uneducated and savage people groups, the Local Americans were for all intents and purposes gathered together like wild creatures and crowded into little regions called reservations. Through this, numerous Locals lost their families and tribes.…

With so much production and consumption of a plethora of different forms of media, too many people never need to need for it to be any different than how it is, never have to wish it would change. Too many people, unknowingly, take for granted something another group of people would weep with joy at finding. This is what being represented in the media can feel like. African Americans experience anywhere from negative representation to erasure from television, film, literature, and even the educational curriculum. This lack of active or positive representation stems from a long, complex history of slavery and racism.…

The African American society has benefitted extremely well due to the rise of awareness that education is a crucial tool to reach your ultimate potential. Education is what now helps and helped the African American man strive in daily life. Education is defined as, “the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction.” This process was thought of to be not needed or for African Americans, as the south thought an educated man was considered “dangerous.” This “dangerous” is good for the African American people, though, as it brought stability and reassurance to the community for the men to strive.…

Over the course of the years that African American Studies has been a separate functioning entity, there have been different ideological and political reasons for why African American studies are needed in institutions of higher education. Scholars such as Nathan Hare, John Henrik Clark, John W. Blassingame and Devere E. Pentony have given their own varied rationales as to why they believe African American Studies is a necessity within these institutions; if it is even one at all. Each of these men have different opinions on this topic but they do share one similar perspective. The historical importance of black people should be taught and made a fundamental component of African American Studies because in institutions of higher education,…

Prior to this lesson, I worked with patients in a community psychiatry setting in Baltimore Maryland. I was surprised to learn that there may be a correlation between schizophrenia and African Americans. The hypothesis makes sense particularly in places like Baltimore and where the teaching hospital there is responsible for the unauthorized research of an African American’s cells, the lead poisoning experiment that was tested on low income kids in the area, the continuation of the displacement of many poor African Americans to expand their business interest and the experiment in Guatemala wherein hundreds of people were infected with syphilis and gonorrhea for the sake of research. It took a lot of hard work to gain the trust of patients there.…
