Reflection On AP Language And Composition

Improved Essays
I grew greatly in my writing over the course of this year. Previously, I wrote based on instinct and in the style to which I adjusted; since starting AP Language & Composition, I’ve developed a certain writing foundation and learned to write with a much more defined purpose. Before this course, I often tried to cover given topics to the best of my ability, but I struggled as I lacked enough of a background in the technical skill necessary for writing to successfully cover all of the bases. I did not recognize the variety of skill sets needed to write all the different genres that existed in the realm of writing; I just wrote in a consistent, similar style for each and every assignment I wrote, even if my style didn’t satisfy the requirements of that specific essay. …show more content…
Whereas before I did not differentiate between genres, reading a wide variety of genres in the Patterns books taught me that each genre requires a specific form of composition and that I needed to manipulate my style to suit each specific type. Then, by encouraging diversity through the assignment of genre-specific essays, the class taught me specifically how to manipulate my style. I learned to eliminate any unneeded phrases, words, and tangents. This included be verbs, which frequently plagued my compositions prior to this year. I developed the skills needed to effectively and efficiently eliminate mistakes in my writing, cleaning up the loose ends that kept my writing just below the necessary level to rise to the top. This course helped me to strengthen my knowledge of writing and prepare me for the next level of education on the

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

As you requested, I am writing to share my past writing experiences which include what kinds of writing I have done in school, the feedback that I seek on my work before I turn in assignments, the memories that I have of writing, voluntary writing I have done, and much more. Past Experiences with Writing Previous to this course I have taken several mandatory English, Writing, and Literature courses in which I have gained experience that now impact the way I write. In high school, I took my basic English & Writing courses, along with an Advanced Placement English IV course, in which the teacher persuaded me to join the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and compete in the Ready Writing Competition, in which I won first place in the…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

With each new assignment I started to learn more about writing, and about my writing style. I began to embrace the process that I go through when I write. My attitude towards writing was changing quickly. Murray points out “Every writer goes to the writing desk with a set of assumptions that may make the writing difficult or easy” (86). It’s amazing how much your attitude towards something can effect it, and how the slightest change in that attitude can make a task that was once difficult into something you look forward to…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

I need to keep myself grounded and not get too overconfident in my writing style and previous work based on what grade I received. I have realized that I need to continue to strive for excellence instead of drafting and essay and not making edits to it that will be beneficial to my learning. Moving forward in my future English classes I will be able to apply the four learning outcomes we learned in this course, writing process, exploration and argumentation, purpose and audience, research and conventions and mechanics to benefit my learning and project scores. I will also be able to apply the learning outcomes to my future helping me to be a more rounded person who can draft, plan, edit, analyze, incorporate evidence and portray ideas effectively to the different audiences I will…

Development Scared, nervous, and unhappy would describe how I felt about taking a college English class. English was my most dreaded subject, and always has been simply because there is not always a right answer. I like to think and view things as black and white, but English is full of digging through the grey. Never the less I walked into my first day of English 101 dreading what was to come, however I left with an open mind.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

Throughout this course, writing took more than just writing about what you read. Here I learned to process all the information that needs to be processed and come up with some way to get it out on paper. With writing I have learned that vocabulary and grammar are two very affective sides to it. With grammar I have learned when to end a sentence. Working on grammar for my writing also allowed me to learn, when the time came for me to use punctuation and extend the sentence.…

Academic writing has usually been fairly effortless for me, up to this point in my life. Since I came directly from high school to this university, my professional writing experience is, sadly, limited to the two weeks notice letter I wrote to my boss before I quit my part time job at the fine dining establishment known as Chik-Fil-A. My high school English classes held some of my fondest memories in my high school career, second only to wrestling class. Whereas other students loathed essays and book reports, I saw them as an opportunity to exhibit one of my talents. Regrettably, my enthusiasm for academic writing was not equal to my enthusiasm towards class work and homework.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
