Reflection On A Young Republican Party

Improved Essays
Last year, I got heavily involved in the 2016 presidential election. I worked extensively with the Young Democrats club at my school to canvass for Hillary Clinton in the Northern Virginia Area. I chose to canvass, because I personally felt that the republican candidate went against my personal principles of morality and ethics. I felt that Hillary Clinton would have a positive impact on my community, and that she would help all those I cared about in my school and my neighborhood. I went door-to-door, getting information for the polls. I went to rallies, protested, and kept up with the news for local government and the national government. I made sure to keep anyone informed with as much of an unbiased opinion as possible. Additionally, I

Compounding the problem of voter fatigue that results from frequent elections for a dizzying number of offices is the historical dominance in Texas of only one or two political parties at any one time. For more than a century after the Civil War the Democratic Party dominated Texas politics, so much so that it was practically a necessity to be a Democrat to hold public office (Texas, 2017). Democrats held a lock on state politics and government throughout the first half of the twentieth century, but beneath the surface the party's dominance was crumbling. Political change in Texas and the nation eroded the conditions that fostered Democratic dominance. "This single-party dominance tended to limit the range of political debate, in turn constraining…

During primary elections, party competition heightens over voter participation as it determines the direction of political change in Texas. Up until 1960, the Democratic Party controlled nearly all Texas elections. This is because, “when one political party tends to dominate [the selection of a public official], voters who wish to participate in choosing their local public officials must vote in that party’s primary” (197). But over the half past-century, many counties have shifted from the Democratic to the Republican primary.…

The Republican party was formed on June 17, 1856. The party was formed to help stop the spread of slavery into western territories, after the passing of the Kansas-Nebraska act in 1854. This act would allow the settlers to decide whether or not their state would be a slave state. The name of the party was created by Horace Greeley in a 1854 new york newspaper article. In this article he said: "We should not care much whether those thus united (against slavery) were designated 'Whig,' 'Free Democrat' or something else; though we think some simple name like 'Republican' would more fitly designate those who had united to restore the Union to its true mission of champion and promulgator of Liberty rather than propagandist of slavery."…

The “Reedemers” can be described as the group of people from the south, who belonged to the white race and were democrats who were led by rich group of people like either landowners, or businessmen and professionals, who constituted the pro-business faction and conservatives in the Democratic Party. During this time the republicans dominated the south and hence these redeemers carried on their policy of redemption whereby they were seeking to drive out the radical republican group from their position. The main goal of the redeemers was to end the existing biracial government and end the reconstruction era while putting the Democratic Party back in power in the south and reestablish white supremacy. During most controversial topics, people tend to favorite one side without hearing an opposing view. Growing up in a predominantly white high school and college for Kailegh Tinnin and myself, only gave us unanswered questions about our society when it came to racial discussions. Why do we live in a world that acts negative without a discussion when someone disagrees with our opinions? Kailegh had racial slurs directed at her in high school.…

In recent decades there has been extensive examination of the resurgence of the Republican Party in the American South in the period after World War II. There were many events that occurred during this time that might have helped the Republican Party have increased success at getting its candidates elected in the South. One of the relationships that needed to be explored was the relationship between the decline of agriculture as the primary provider of jobs and economic prosperity and the increased ability of the Republican Party to get people elected. The purpose of this project is to determine whether there is a joint relationship between the decline in southern agriculture and an increase in per capita income, which led to an increase in…

Sam Richards starts out by telling us how our thoughts, feelings and actions are dictated by our surroundings. He then continues telling us how we are part of a bigger picture. We may never know all the people who are going through the same struggles we are, but we can find comfort in knowing that we are experiencing the same trials and triumphs that others are. I have learned a great deal about using my “sociological imagination” through the campaigning I did in the Republican Primary. When you are knocking on someone's door to simply ask them, "may I ask who you're voting for?".…

The Republican Platform’s Views on Three Topics There are two main platforms in politics in the United States with third parties in the mix. After taking two quizzes that determined their results bases on asking questions on current issues, I was matched to the Republican National Committee at 43% (45% for social issues and 40% for economic issues). I had a 38% rating for the Democratic National Committee (with a 35% for social issues and 40% for economic issues) and a 5% rating for the Green Party (with 0% for social issues and 10% for economic issues). The Republican Platform matched my views on three issues in the United States, dealing with the present-day restriction of religion in schools, the current Education system, and the Illegal Immigration problem.…

Citizens see that this is evolving more and more each day and the government is just ignoring it for “bigger problems”. Although slavery’s disruption of the political system was an immediate cause of the Republican Party’s creation, the party also reflected basic economic and social changes in American society, namely, the market revolution’s completion and the beginning of mass immigration from Europe. The American economy grew rapidly in the late 1840s and early 1850s. The expansion of a national railroad network did much to hasten economic growth. By 1860, railroads, and no longer water, carried most of the crops and goods in the nation. Rail helped integrate the Old Northwest and the Northeast, laying the basis for political unity in the form of the Republican Party.…
