When entering a new class curriculum, you do not know what to expect. Throughout this English 1B course the main focus was on critical thinking. It was what generated the whole class, but the topics that were covered went beyond the words in the articles. From the various reading responses to the claim essays, it all impacted and changed my point of view, beliefs, and way of life. Not only did it make me a better reader and writer, it also made me think beyond the context to think differently. It gave me a new normal. English has never been my strong suit, but I was determined to give my best effort. I 've never been a person who likes to talk about themselves, so I found this very challenging especially having to do it for the whole semester each new reading response was a stepping stone towards getting more comfortable with doing new things and it defiantly showed in every new assignment that was done. Reading “Coming to an Awareness of Language” by Malcolm X and how he found his own voice when he wasn 't being heard. He made me open my mind and be amazed at the fact that he learned how to read and write in prison, that he even read the entire dictionary. It was a great way to begin and get engage in the course. I actually read the article twice because it spoke to me and made me look forward to what other great stories our professor would choose for us to read inside Language Awareness: Readings for College Writers. After various topics we encountered “What’s Natural about Our Natural Products?” by Sarah Federman. It discussed the word natural and how it is being manipulated into various meanings, just to lure the consumer into buying a healthy organic product when it may not even be the truth. This reading plus the documentaries that were shown actually affected me the most out of the whole course. I started to read labels, look at packaging and most importantly changed my way of eating by becoming a vegetarian. It 's been a hard process but I 'm glad that I got aware of the issue and made a positive
