Speaking with Yellow Creek Mennonite Church’s Senior Pastor, Wes Bontreger is always a pleasure. He is consistently kind and opens his conversations with a smile and a plethora of jokes or stories that put at ease anyone in his presence. Meeting him at The Electric Brew in Goshen just over a week ago, our conversation progressed similar to its normal fashion, albeit with a slightly mor somber tone. Bontreger had just finished several days of viewing and funeral officiating, and when asked his entrance to ministry, he was forced to confront his own brush with death. At twelve he was diagnosed with terminal leukemia..…

In Richard Rodriguez’s autobiography, Hunger of Memory, his Catholic faith is spoken to have played a critical role in his development, from childhood to adulthood. If de Beauvoir’s ideas are taught and encouraged, I believe there are many benefits. A society in which a woman or man is left to become who they want to be, without a historical idea that they must live up to, is a much more free society than today’s society. This brings forth an interesting statistic that I came across in Susan Okin’s article, “Vulnerability by Marriage.” The statistic stated that more women than not find the domestic life as well as the chores and responsibilities associated with it to be boring (Okin 608).…

Shanice Mzavas I really enjoyed this week’s readings on conducting interviews since I was planning on interviewing a “protected class” of people for my thesis. Before I began readings, I was stuck on how to proceed with my research proposal. I knew that I wanted to study the possible interdependent relationship between childhood obesity and mental health, but I did not know how I was going to begin. Previously, I created a list of interview questions that measured depression, asked questions about self-esteem, and asked if and how children used food as a coping mechanism. What I was missing from my interview questionnaire was the purpose.…

During this question Pastor Jacque began by telling me about her background and early life. She informed me that she was born and raised in Santiago California, to parents that she described as people who didn’t have everything put together.…
