Reflective Essay Of Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

During this semester, we had to write three essays. With each one came different requirements, challenges and also a sense of accomplishment. Throughout my educational career, I have written many, many essays. Each time I write them though, I feel like I improve. I learn from my mistakes I had previously made and remember those so that I can make each paper that much better. This class and these three essays are no exception to that. The first essay that we were assigned in English Composition II was a compare and contrast, the second an essay about moral and ethical dilemmas, and the last an argumentative research paper. At the beginning of the semester we were assigned our first paper, a compare and contrast essay. At first I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to write about. Yes, there were …show more content…
Once again, I did not know what I was going to write about. I started off with an idea but then after searching for secondary sources I switched the literary piece. For this essay I wrote about “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I was very interested in this story because I am from Massachusetts and have been to Salem, and have heard about the witch trails multiple times. This story also had an ending that made you use your imagination, did Brown actually experience what he did in the woods, or was it all a dream? Also, the story really made you think throughout the whole piece which was nice, but confusing at times. This second essay taught me to just write. This has always been a technique that I have used in writing, but this essay confirmed that. Instead of getting caught up in grammar and punctuation, I just wrote whatever came to mind about the assigned question. After I was done writing what came to mind, I would go back and add in quotes and secondary sources, as well as proofread and edit my essay. Overall I learned what the best writing process for me

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Most of Hawthorne’s critics feel as if “Young Goodman Brown” one of his best works. In my opinion D.C. McKeithan chooses to interpret Hawthorne’s tale by using an example of a man who is saddened into distrust by the sins of the people surrounding him. He is made skeptical and untrusting of others because of his own contributes into sin. McKeithan goes around this by mainly seeing that while there are a bunch of different interpretations, past critics have failed to realize some of the most apparent parts of the story.…

Young Goodman Brown, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a common American short story about the guilty conscience we human beings have. Goodman Brown is presented with a test of his faith in God. In this ambiguous story, Brown debates the reality of the events that took place versus everything just being a dream. The theme shows the battle between good and evil under the capacity of turning away from one’s faith and falling for the evils of life. Throughout the story, Hawthorne reveals the natural weaknesses in human nature and how the human soul falls into temptation.…

On July 4, 1804, Nathaniel Hawthorne, a descendant of two Puritan prosecutors, was born in Salem, Massachusetts. He believed that his Puritan ancestors William and John Hathorne had committed wicked acts, which brought upon a curse on his family. William, a bitter and relentless man, prosecuted the Quakers in 1630 for going against the beliefs of the Puritan church. During the Salem witch trials of 1690, John presided as a judge and condemned innocent people of witchcraft. His condemnation of the innocent supposedly left a curse on his family that continued from generation to generation.…

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s family was deep rooted in the Puritan religion, which could explain his strong morals and interest in religion and faith. Faith is a private symbol for Nathaniel Hawthorne because it reaches across many of his works. In Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown, for example, Brown’s wife represents religious faith and the many phases that someone with faith will go through in their lives.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

James Tervort Hicken English 11 7 October 2015 Goodman Symbolism Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” tells the story of a man whose beliefs and faiths are or on the brink of destruction from temptation. Goodman Brown loses his belief in humanity when he discovers that the devils followers are all around us and every man has an evil spirit within himself. A different reaction would have been to accept the problems with man, and use that to get along better with others. We all sin, nobody is perfect, this is just a part of life we have to accept and deal with in a wise fashion. The main character is engulfed by this knowledge and takes a step back from life.…

Young Goodman Brown dreams the witch’s coven, but in his dream he is an active participant, experiencing it first hand. I believe this is a dream because Goodman Brown sees other townspeople, including his wife, walking in the woods to the meeting of the witches. Also, I believe he falls asleep in the woods before he meets the older man because he wakes up in the same place. It does make a difference in my interpretation of the story because it makes the events in the plot easier to understand, especially how demented the events sound. Hawthorne uses many symbols in the story, two of the most important being his wife, Faith and the woods.…

The Loss of Faith and Innocence In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “Young Goodman Brown,” he illustrates the duplicity of man’s mind and the struggles to understand truth. By the end of the dark story, the author does not articulate if Young Goodman Brown really took part in a heathen experience in the night described in the story or if it was all made up. Whether part of his imagination or real, the experiences of Brown changed his life forever. It changed everything he knew about faith, love, mankind and society. “A stern, a sad, a darkly meditative, a distrustful, if not a desperate man did he become from the night of that fearful dream.”…

The loss of Goodman Brown’s marriage to his wife, the aptly named Faith caused him to lose two things at once.. Goodman Brown and his wife Faith have been married for three months and this shows that Goodman Brown lacks a deep attachment to Faith. This resembles the willingness to stray from his wife to embark on his evening journey. Although Goodman Brown knows what lies ahead of him on his journey into the woods ,is not good he see’s this momentary dabbling in the dark side as a one time affair. ’’My love and My faith” replied young goodman brown “of all nights in the year, this one night must i tarry away from thee”.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Symbolism and allegory are two literary elements that are frequently used in many literary works. Symbolism, an element that uses images and indirect impression to represent ideas, emotions, and state of mind is compared to allegory, a representation of an abstract or spiritual meaning in the form of a narrative or concrete material. These elements are commonly used in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown.” Hawthorne’s story provides an example of allegory in which he uses figures and characters in the story as symbols to better support his allegorical tones in which he uses complete symbolism.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
