Personal Narrative: My Reflection Of Writing

Improved Essays
I’m writing you a letter from the future. Well actually it’s not a letter at all, it’s an assignment that I’ve disguised to look like a letter. So I lied to you, deal with it, I’ve been lying to myself for years. This piece of writing here is a reflection. Past Thos, I know you hate reflections, I do to, but this right here is the best reflection you’ll ever write. You’re about to have an interesting semester. Not only because your body is going to fall a part all of a sudden, but because you’re going to learn a lot about your writing. I remember going into to Writing 101 the second semester of my second year felt a little strange at first. I knew I would be a few years older than most of the other people in the class and probably have …show more content…
I felt burnt out on writing. There was a time, back in my sophomore year of high school where I loved writing. I could write a 20 page paper no problem, the words would flow, and the final product would actually be something decent. But that love of writing went away in college. After a year and a half of classes which had me writing at least one paper every week, I really started to get bored with it. Most of the classes I’ve taken, haven’t graded the papers on the quality of the writing but on the information contained in the words. That lead me to a point where I’d just write to fill the page without caring much for how I wrote. I think my first essay for this class showed that off. It wasn’t a good example of my ability to write, it just met the requirements of the assignment. It wasn’t exactly a paper I was proud of but with so many other assignments I fell on my habit of writing to fill the page without putting any heart into what I wrote. Through our class discussions, and comments on my work, and our readings I really started to think more about my writing. And with the final paper I feel reinvigorated with my writing. I actually enjoy what I’m putting on the paper, and I think I’ve written some decent stuff, or atlas a few good sentences here and there. My confidence in my writing has also gone up. I use to hate having people read what I write but having mandatory peer reviews has definitely gotten me over

Thinking about the whole concept “writing for me” is so cliche I feel like, but it’s the way that helps me feel like my work is important, and worth reading. My writing experience before this class was very stressful. I wasn 't and I am still not a strong writer when it comes to academics. I also hate writing for a class. Although, I feel like I have grown when it comes to my writing since high school.…

I also had fallen into becoming a procrastinator my second semester of college. Pushing my homework and assignments off was one of the biggest mistakes I have made throughout my first year of college. Once I started this course, I was still in the horrible habit of pushing my responsibilities off, but after my first essay was completed, I soon realized that my professor was not going to tolerate. The way the class went was, either you do the assignments or you do not get a grade at all.…

Little did I know that was not the case. After receiving my grade and feedback I realized my sentences were choppy and not well put together. When I submitted my paper the second time not only did I receive a better grade but also a better understanding of what my papers should look like and what the content should include. I really enjoyed writing this paper, because it allowed me to write about something I have a passion for. I really enjoy writing narratives, but I believe the easiest and best paper I wrote in this class would be essay two.…

Starting with the negative experience first, I am choosing the one that sticks out to me the most. Senior year of high school my English teacher assigned us to write several papers over the course of a few weeks on the book Lord of the Flies. I loathed this book by the time we were done reading it. We did several quick stories and one essay on this book. The teacher gave us a week to write the essay and after they were graded we got them back and 2 days to completely rewrite them because they weren’t good enough.…

I believe that this class was able to help improve my writing skills in many ways. Producing mid-drafts seemed like a nuisance at first, but has really helped improve my writing. By producing mid-drafts I was always tempted to re-read my essays before handing them in, which is something that I had never did before. Also having peer feedback also helped my writing. With the peer feedback I was able to take what was wrong with my paper and fix it before turning it in for a final grade which I found as excellent.…

However, little by little I started to make friends and talk to my roommates. I also struggle to adapt to my schedule. I felt like I did not have time for anything, and when I did I was not doing my homework. Since most of my classes do not actually have homework, but just readings I took the course lightly. That was a great mistake because I fell behind in my readings and when midterms came I would have to read like 200 pages in one day.…

Last semester, my highest graded paper consisted of a very well written introduction and then a sort of paragraph outline with quotes and my ideas concerning the quotes. My professor last semester remarked that the papers I had turned in and the grades I received definitely did not reflect my abilities, and were marked down due to the lack of organization in my work. I know that my content is “A quality”, but I need to improve the structure of my papers to earn the grades I should…

As the class progressed I learned to actually enjoy writing and researching more. I thought it would be another writing course with boring prompts and no challenge leading me to hate and dread this class similar to high school, but I was wrong. In this semester alone I learned more about my writing style, mechanics, structure, heading, organizing and sourcing than I had previously in my high school career.Teacher in high school just does not do a sufficient job at teaching the mechanics of writing. This being said I did not earn the grades I wanted, but I learned from all my mistakes as I wrote each paper it became slightly better. I realized that with each paper my grade increased slightly.…

I never did much pre-writing before my English 101 class this year. The most pre-writing I had ever done before English 101 would be writing down some ideas but it wasn’t very organized so it was hard to read. Pre-writing helps me a lot with developing my paper because it allowed me to get my different ideas down on paper so, I could see which ones were better than the other ones. It also helps me because doing pre-writing help me stay organized for my papers. After I put all of my ideas down then I start working on my outline.…

I was able to learn a great deal about their writing, get good feedback, and improve on my papers dramatically. Even though I wrote some good papers this semester, I believe that I can write some better ones and improve the not so great ones. Before I didn’t really like writing, but now I can’t say that I still feel the same way. I enjoy writing and conducting interviews, writing about my pass, and just writing my feelings and thoughts. I learned the type of writing that I enjoy, which is…
