While what one finds important changes with every experience, the reality is lessons of life are equally if not more important than anything one learns in school. Role models, idols, family members, and friends each have their impact on one’s life. Therefore a concept that resonates deeply is understanding the importance of deciding what one chooses to value, the importance of appreciating the little things, and the truth about giving and what it means for both the giver and the receiver (Albom, 18, 52, 155). Tuesdays with Morrie explains these simple but powerful ideas and much more. Through Mitch Albom’s eyes, one can appreciate Morrie almost like a modern day Confucius. Taking the time to appreciate what is around one’s everyday existence often gets put on the back burner. However, Morrie shows through a different perspective, how important it is to appreciate what is small yet significant such as beauty in one’s surroundings, love of one’s family, and the closeness of friends. Through this process one can attain a level of fulfillment not as a result of everything is right in the world or one receives everything he or she desires. Instead one feels a sense of satisfaction that stems from something deeper and more rewarding. The theory of appreciating the small instances and experiences in life does not mean only the most obvious method of enjoying the little things but also in everyday actions without much thought. For example, finding the reasons behind one’s failure, acts of forgiveness, and how important love is in the grand scheme of life.
