Community Identification Project

The community that I have chosen to “build bridges” with is the transgender community. I chose this community is because my exposure to them has been very low, thus my education is limited and my perspective is narrow. I have seen a decent amount of shows that depict the lives of transgender people, such as “I am Cait” which chronicles Caitlyn Jenner’s (formally Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner) transition, and other shows on TLC, so most of my information comes from the media, which can be problematic. Through this project I would like to become more correctly informed about the transgender community and in the process abolish my own prejudices.
More precisely, I would like to build bridges with this community because I feel like I may

Being respectful and accepting towards people different than yourself is beneficial and essential both personally and professionally. In my personal life I think this project will put me out of the bubble that I sometimes feel like I live in, because I personally am very well protected and never really have had to face any discrimination or injustice. I am hoping this project makes me a better person who is more willing to interact and become friends with people who are different than me. Professionally, I also think this project will benefit me. I want to either become a social worker or a school psychologist, and both jobs often involve working with people from different backgrounds than me. In both these careers it is crucial to recognize the kind of oppression and marginalization that people from different communities go through, in order to be the most effective in guiding them in their lives. One of my favorite quotes is by Martin Luther King Jr and goes, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” My end goal for this project is to drive out any hate or prejudices I have against the transgender community and replace it with love, acceptance, and understanding through

The 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) found trans people are approximately four times as likely to live in extreme impecuniosity compared to the general population. Personal Values I have a strong bias to be an advocate for sexual/gender minorities in the LGBTQ community, especially those with intersectional identities. This is shown in my professional values and my involvement and advocacy with the transgender community. As part of the LGBTQ community and a person of color myself, I understand some of the systemic barriers that affect the transgender community, such as difficulty finding competent providers, lack of insurance coverage, and high poverty rates. Even though I am part of the overall community, I have seen how the LGBQ community often excludes transgender individuals in their issues. This further excludes them as they may not feel heard or supported by other gender and/or sexual minorities…

My Own Biases I believe that our text, The Psychology of Women, is a feminist book. Feminism is a basic belief that women and men deserve the same amount of respect and equality in all social, legal, and economic aspects of life. Matlin describes the definitions of feminism in those terms and also adds that a society that values the ideas and experiences of women is a feminist one which I found to be repetitive along with the idea of equality across all areas of society (page 5). The individual that wrote the amazon review claims that Matlin discusses her ideas and opinions as though they were fact. I found that the text limited information that was not objective and science driven.…

The Transgender Community Health project, which was developed out of this community research project continues to actively meet and work with government and public stake holders. The project has been so successful that there are talks to expand the program into a nationwide initiative. As an action researcher, I would apply the techniques that this group utilized to establish a system that empowers the group to build out and establish a system that is self sustaining. I feel that one of the major reasons why this project is able to be continued even a decade after the project has ended is because of how much power the community was given in this project from the beginning and were therefore able to continue it even after the project had…

The transgender movement first emerged in 1952, but was formality made into a movement in 1969 with the Stonewall riots, which also was the birth of the LGBT movement. Since then transgender rights and transgendered people, in general, have been a prevalent topic in todays media since the passing of several LGBT laws. The passing of laws in favour of the LGBT, such as, marriage equality law, the transgender community is now focusing on obtaining laws that favour the movement in gaining equal and civil rights. Now ever since the movement emerged there has been a debate over whether there needs to be laws to protect them from discrimination.
