A Reflection of the Self
I found this to be an appreciable assignment in which I was pushed to exceed my normal comfort zone in writing and expressing my views. This assignment helped improve my writing and reading in several ways. I overcame struggles in my writing, reading and found innovative ways to progress through these difficult texts in the development towards writing this essay. The process of going from “Madman”, “Architect”, “Carpenter” and “Editor” was a tremendously useful tool in the creation of my paper. These progressions and workshops allowed myself to have a focused task instead of worrying about everything at once. It is much more rewarding to write in this class than in my high school.

I had a multitude of ideas I wanted to write about and fill my paper with. This only added to my confusion about what fits where and what ideas I would like to develop. This is comparable to the “Madman” state in which I mentioned earlier. I worked in this state for greatest amount of time for my essay to access my creativity without over thinking it and letting my thoughts flow. This relays to the “Architect” who orders ideas. I began organizing my ideas and developing a course of action. Soon determining which ideas I wanted to investigate I created an outline for this. I read through my essay out loud and filled in where I felt it was jumpy and uneven, which is the “Carpenter” stage. Finally, there is the “Editor”; I spent a long time with organizing and writing, and now it was time to edit my grammatical errors and spelling. The three student group workshops were also extremely constructive to my writing. It was enjoyable having my peers examine my writing and share their thoughts with me. When my paper was read out loud I found numerous errors, which I continuously missed in my …show more content…
Peer review is an excellent form of editing and certainly benefited my writing in this class. This class seems to have a general understanding of respecting others work and creating an environment where genuine learning can occur. I remember one classmate in particular from my previous English class saying to another student, “this is absolutely the worst paper I have ever read.” This is an example of my English classroom and as you can tell it was awfully unconstructive in times. These workshops improved my writing through reading and by responding to others work in these classroom discussions. I was able to gain different ideas and find fresh
