PROGRAM OF STUDY
The program of study I chose at the University of Mary is the MSN/MBA dual degree
program. I chose this graduate degree track because I felt it best suited my current professional
position and it would be a strong foundation should I decide to transition into nursing leadership.
I felt it was necessary to pursue a graduate degree in order to remain competitive in the job
market, but most importantly, I believe that I will be able to affect improved patient outcomes
through a knowledge of nursing research and evidence-base practice.
RESEARCH TRAINING
I do not have any formal training in nursing research, but during my nursing career I have

NURSING RESEARCH AND THE GRADUATE PREPARED NURSE
It is my belief that a graduate prepared nurse is more equipped to promote the utilization
of nursing research and evidence-based practice. Academic training instills a mindset of inquiry
but also provides a foundation for the steps needed to develop, plan and implement nursing
research to generate evidence. It is important that nurses that who do not or are not interested in
conducting their own nursing research minimally understand nursing research methods in order to
facilitate accurate data collection. In my previous example there were many nurses that had no
interest in the development or implementation of a standardized ventilatory weaning process, but
because they had an understanding of the importance of having a standardized process and
parameters, they willingly participated.
COMFORT LEVEL WITH NURSING RESEARCH
Over all, I am comfortable with working on research or evidence-based practice projects.
I usually have little issue with identifying areas of improvement, however I often struggle
