Mrs. W (my assigned patient) had her basic needs fulfilled before being admitted to the long term care facility. However, she was lacking in feeling safe and secure because of a fall. Helping her with ambulating moved her up on the hierarchy of needs pyramid by making her feel safe from falling down and getting hurt. Her next need of love and belongs were fulfilled by her friend and son who she spoke with every day. I believe Mrs. W was at the top of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and achieved, self- actualization. Despair. My patient has excellent nurses, staff and family to take care of her. They are helping her to feel valued, appreciated and needed. She does have regrets of not being a teaching but I got the sense she felt her life was meaningful and whole. She did not despair on this subject very long when talking to her. She seemed to at peace living in a long term care facility. Working with the staff and patients at this facility has changed my perspective on them. Every patent was treated with respect and had an individual plan for their care. They all are individuals with likes and dislikes and the staff took this into consideration when caring for them. This leads me to my conclusions. I am glad I had the opportunity to work at such a wonderful long term care facility. The patients and staff provided me with opportunities to utilize the skills I learned in class. I was able to do many tasks to include: ambulate patients, feed them and performing patient assessments. I was able to use communications skills such as open-ended questions and silence. I apply nursing theories such as Erik Erikson’s theory on psychosocial development and concept of nursing through Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to patients. I learned I am task oriented but loved this experience and I hope God
