Reflection Of The Last Lecture By Randy Pausch

The Last Lecture written by Randy Pausch is simply inspiring and heartwarming. Here you have a man who has six months to live and doesn’t dwell on the things he will never experience. Instead, he reflects on his life and what he gained from the experiences he had in the hopes of leaving his wisdom behind for his children. Over the course of this paper, I plan to not only personally reflect on the book but to also incorporate leadership qualities and skills mentioned by Pausch. I first would like to reflect on the part of the book that I related to vastly. One of Randy’s childhood dreams was to be in the National Football League, which lead him to playing football by the age of eight. His first coach, Coach Graham, was a true believer of fundamentals. Randy was continuously given a hard time by his coach, which he soon found out to be caused by the amount of faith his coach had in him. Ironically, when I was eight years old, I began playing traveling softball because my dream was to be like my big brother and play baseball. “The brick walls are there for reason. They’re not there to keep it us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something” (Pausch 2008, pg. 52). Randy encountered many brick walls in his life, but that never stopped him from achieving his dreams. He was able to experience zero gravity as a journalist instead of an instructor. He was able to use his sabbatical to be a Disney Imagineer despite his superiors not thinking it was a good idea. He married the woman of his dreams even after she said she didn’t think she loved him after all.
