It is important to know how to use the proper communication to deliver excellent care for patients. I was able to witness the relationship nurses have with doctors and ways to share their opinions without disrespecting the surgeon in charge of the procedure. I was taught ways to protect our bodies from getting injured in the OR and keep a healthy lifestyle since this job can be extremely demanding. I learned how to transfer patients and how to assist them in order to keep their safety. It is important to read the patient’s history before visiting them in the pre-op area to know what it is expected for the patient. The surgical team I shadowed did not skip any steps, but instead took more time to make sure they were doing an outstanding job. The nurse starts with picking up the patient from pre-op and checking their armband and talks to them to verify they are the correct person. They also asked for vitals of the patient and speak with the nurses in charged during this time period to discuss if patient has had any crucial changes that might affect the procedure. The nurse will accommodate the surgery table depending on the procedure that will be performed and with the help of the other surgical members will transition the patient into the table. In the OR room the nurse writes valuable information regarding the patient in the board such as name, date, time of transition of the patient into the room, time out, allergies, and incision. The verification of the sign consent is also extremely important I witnessed that some patients wanted to get a tubal ligation, but did not sign the consent 30 days prior to the procedure therefore the surgeon did not follow with what the patient said, but the formal documentation that was prepared with extensive time. The surgical team also kept the patient warmed to prevent hypothermia and control the IV fluids given.
