Visual Design Reflection

A majority of technical writing/reports rely heavily on the visual layout and the design. Visual layout and design is an area of my writing that greatly improved as the semester progressed. At the beginning of the semester visual layout and design was not a major point of emphasis in my writing, however, as the semester progressed, I began to consider visual design more and more. This progression helped me to make three visually appealing artifacts that subsequently helped improve each artifact individually. My conscious inclusion of visual design in my writing helped to make the presentation cleaner and easier to follow as well as helping to improve upon the visual aspect of WOVEN. However, as the semester progressed, I began to realize that the design of the presentation could greatly increase of the effectiveness of the presentation as well as peak the interest of the audience in a way that a generic slideshow can not. This realization came during the creation of the proposal of the group project on XO Orpheus. In my proposal I created a presentation with a generic background that neither supported or contradicted the ideas that were being addressed and was mostly superfluous, and this detracted from the overall effectiveness of the proposal as a whole. However, after meeting with my group and looking into the visual design I was able to realize that the proposal could be greatly improved upon by enhancing the visual design. After this meeting I changed the background of the presentation to fit more with the ideas that were mentioned in the proposal. This encounter helped me to realize the importance of visual design. Visual design helps to make a project more appealing to the audience and can greatly help technical writing, and also had to be considered when creating the final presentation for the project XO Orpheus. The XO Orpheus project had a major critical reading component that needed to be presented to the class, so I decided to use a tree as the background of the Prezi. The tree allowed for me to incorporate the growth of the story metaphorically in the shape of a tree, such that the development of the story matched a part of the tree. For example, the backstories, that our short story out of XO Orpheus originated from, was the roots of the tree. This allowed for the audience to easily follow the progression of the presentation and make connections with the story and something that is present in their daily lives. While visual design was the greatest area of improvement for me during

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Saddler (2012) discusses how to help students write effective sentences through sentence combining exercises. Through these exercises, students can learn how to analyze and combine words and phrases together in creative ways. This can help my students with word choice, conventions, structure and the ideas they need to create strong sentences to support their universal idea. The other strategy that is especially important for my classroom setting is the idea of self-regulated writing strategies as discussed by Graham, MacArthur and Fitzgerald (2013). Using visuals such as graphic organizers can help my students visualize their universal idea and structure their writing to support their universal…

Even now, as a college student, I do not find it to be enjoyable if I am inclined to write as a requirement for a class. Many times, I find the process of drafting 5 paragraphs with 3 body paragraphs compressed between an Intro and Conclusion to be tedious and burdensome, but over time I have learned to appreciate this process. Although slaving away to move my fingers across my keyboard to type several drafts takes time, it is helpful in the end to develop a well written paper. In the past, I would settle for an average of a C on all my essays because my writing style was plain and it lacked a sophisticated tone. This was due to my use of simple sentences and awkward word choices throughout my essays. It was not until I met Mrs. Barnheiser that my writing technique evolved. Having had the privilege of taking her class, she taught me the importance of using complex sentences and use of imagery and symbolism to make my writing more sophisticated and less basic; an idea that I had never crossed my mind prior to this…

Generally, my overall goal for this course, as I stated in week one, was to “make my writing more orderly, less time-consuming, and more efficient overall.” As I reflect on the progress I have made, I recognize that I have had some success in meeting this goal, although I still have room for improvement. Thanks to our experience in composing outlines, my writing is better organized and more concise. However, I find that it is still more time-consuming to write than I would like. I would like to make more progress in simplifying the writing process…

Before this class, there are some writing elements that I had not considered using before. One of them being the audience. I never reflected upon the audience’s perspective. This helped me realize that for some instances, I do not give enough detail or I am too broad. Making a clear argument is important to an individual’s paper, and I learned that this can be done with checking to make sure the evidence as well as my explanation makes sense. Having peer reviews also helped with clarifying details to the…

When I came across the topic of reframing in this week’s readings, I immediately thought of myself, and the way I tend to handle difficult and/or stressful situations. Unfortunately, when something doesn’t go my way, I tend to become irritated and ask myself why I have such bad luck. Recently, however, I have noticed myself reframing issues, even when I had never heard of this as a topic before reading chapter 10. For instance, in the beginning of the school year at USC, I was denied a waiver for the USC health insurance plan, which ended up costing me $600. I was initially pretty angry that I would have to pay this amount, because I did have insurance, just not insurance that qualified to allow me to obtain a waiver.…

To fully commit to improving on my weakness, I plan on incorporating my supervisor as well as my three Staff Sergeants I supervised. I will also share my timeline for goal attainment and the above mentioned actions items with them. Furthermore, I will ask them to take notes of my actions and behaviors to assist in providing me feedback on my progress. Every 90 days for the next nine months I plan on asking for an honest 360-degree feedback from my supervisor and my three Staff Sergeants to measure progression or set-backs. I feel that including my supervisor and three Staff Sergeants is realistic because they are older and mature than your typical Lieutenant and Staff Sergeant. Additionally, I believe gaining honest feedback from these…
